| Manhood and Womanhood for Africans Manhood and Womanhood for Africans
Do you think there is a certain age of adulthood for Africans or does it varie for most individuals? And Im speaking of mental and spiritual developement and not physical. I know in the U.S. you are considered an adult when you reach 18. This mainly manifests I believe by the individual not being able to stay in the parents house if the parents chose it that way. But do society as a whole really prepare teenagers to be adults before they are 18 or is it just wait until they reach 18 then throw them out to the wolves? To me it doesnt do teenagers any good to tell them that they should be kids as much as they can and you have your whole life ahead of you. Kids should be kids but their is a psychological message being sent that they shouldnt try to improve in discipline. Its a sneaky confusion becuause 18 is considered an adult but teenagers are still considered teenagers. I would think since you have your whole life ahead of you then you can be a kid and adult later. But most kids just usually end up being big un disciplined adults any way, start drinking before 21 and all the other things that are done. I think we should start going back to our Ancient African philosophies on man hood and woman hood. The rites of passage occur somewhat before 18. Now that we have more of the knowledge of our roots available the responsibility area can go pass doing house chores but more so into spiritual aspects.
