One Nation! ![]() 1966: Five year sentence for tearing down racist mural, St. Petersburg, FL city hall. 1967: Founded The Burning Spear black power newspaper, still published today. 1972: Formed the African People’s Socialist Party 1975: Led the worldwide movement to Free Dessie Woods, an African woman from Georgia sentenced to 22 years for killing a white man who tried to rape her. 1976: founded African People's Solidarity Committee 1980: Formed the African National Prison Organization 1982: Held First International Tribunal on Reparations for African People, Brooklyn 1984: Coordinated Measure O, the Community Control of Housing ballot initiative that won 22 percent of the vote in Oakland, CA 1985: Traveled Europe and U.S. building for the African Socialist International 1990: Formed the International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement 1996: Led the community fight back against the police murder of TyRon Lewis in St. Petersburg FL 2001: Ran for mayor of St. Petersburg; won all black and mixed precincts but one. 2005: Publication of 15 years of speeches: Omali Yeshitela Speaks 2006: Publication of One Africa!
