BARE HANDS VICTORY FREE SCREENING "BARE HANDS VICTORY" AT THE TALKING DRUM COMMUNITY FORUM 5730 S. CRENSHAW: FRIDAY FEBRUARY 24TH, 7:30 P.M. In 1893, eight years after the end of the Berlin West African Conference, France effectively took control of the West African territory now called Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire in French). What followed was a story that we are all to familiar with. Wherever Europeans have gone in Africa, massive death and theft were soon visited upon the unsuspecting and at times too welcoming African inhabitants. Of course it was no different in Cote d'Ivoire. The first victims were the Baole people. A proud and industrious people who fought bravely against the French until they were finally defeated in 1911. At the start of the Baoles resistance, there were 1.2 million of them. At the end of the conflict, only 200,000 Baole remained. A genocide by any standard. Genocide was a matter of policy in Africa when Europeans where not satisfied with Africans response to their demands. After the end World War II, where Europeans had spent 6 years committing genocide against themselves, Africans began to extricate themselves from the long nightmare of European colonialism. On August 7, 1960, the people of Cote d'Ivoire achieved their independence and embarked upon a 42 year period of relative peace and prosperity. Though maintaining close ties to it's former colonial occupier, with a sizable French population remaining in the country including military bases, Ivoirians governed themselves without much outside interference. That all changed in September 2002 when a coup d'etat was attempted by so-called rebels using French supplied weapons. In November 2004, France directly intervened in the conflict on the side of these rebels destroying Cote d'Ivoire's small air force, taking over Cote d'Iovoire's airport and attacking Cote d'Ivoire's Presidential Palace. A clear violation of international law. "Bare Hands Victory", details how the people of Cote d'Ivoire, young and old, challenged France's attempt to violate Cote d'Ivoire's sovereignty. It also details France's brutal and murderous assault against these brave Ivoirian patriots. Screened at this year's Pan-African Film Festival (2006), a must see for those how did not see it, and a must see again, for those who did. The ghosts of colonialism still hovers over Mother Africa. The son of filmmaker Sidiki Bakaba, Sundiata Bakaba, will be present to answer questions. Copies of the film will be available for purchase. This event will be hosted by CEMOTAP-West: Committee To Eliminate Media Offensive to African People For more information call: 323-281-1331
