Former California lawmen plead not guilty in robbery ring case
Associated Press
LOS ANGELES - Three former law enforcement officers pleaded not guilty Monday to charges they participated in a robbery ring whose members wore police uniforms as they raided homes and threatened and beat occupants.
Authorities have charged 19 members of the ring, which they say was led by former Los Angeles police Officer Ruben Palomares.
Prosecutors contend Palomares and his associates targeted locations where people were suspected of selling drugs. They gained access, authorities said, by saying they were conducting a legitimate drug raid, then robbed the occupants of valuables.
Palomares, 36, allegedly supplied the group with uniforms, radios and badges to carry out the raids.
The three who pleaded not guilty Monday were Joseph Ferguson, 31, of Garden Grove, who was fired from the Long Beach Police Department in December 2004; his brother William Ferguson, 33, of Huntington Beach, a former Los Angeles police officer who was fired in 2003; and Rodrigo Duran, 35, of Tehachapi, a former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy. They were indicted last week.
Duran and the Ferguson brothers remained in custody Monday after entering their pleas before U.S. District Judge Gary Feess, who tentatively set a trial date for May 2.
All three face multiple counts of conspiracy to possess narcotics with the intent to distribute, deprivation of rights under color of law and using a firearm during a drug trafficking crime and a crime of violence.
Authorities were looking for three other people who were allegedly part of Palomares' team. Thirteen defendants had been charged in the last 18 months before last week's indictment.
