| FREE SCREENING: "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"~ 7.28.06 FREE SCREENING "THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED" AT THE TALKING DRUM COMMUNITY FORUM 5730 CRENSHAW: FRIDAY JULY 28TH 7:30 P.M. On Decemeber 6,1998 Hugo Rafael Chávez FrÃ*as, popularly known as Hugo Chavez, was elected as Venezuela's first Afro-Indigenous president. Upon taking office he began to immediately dismantel the corrupt Venezuelan "kleptocracy" and put in it's place his "Bolivarian Revolution". Named after the liberator of South America, including Venezuela, Simon Bolivar, Chavez's Bolivarian Revolution would began to benefit Venezueal's poor, who had long been neglected by Venezuela's ruling class. Chavez stopped the privatization of Venezuela's state owned assets and demanded that foreign companies most specifically the oil companies, pay their fair share of taxes. He began to build housing and schools, provide free educaton and healthcare, and embarked upon massive land reform and re-distribution. All of this of course alarmed the ruling class and it's main benefactor, the United States. They immeditley began to try to undermind his presidency and on April 9, 2002, members of the ruling class, along with some members of the military, with direct support from the U.S., staged a coup against Hugo Chavez, kidnapped him and held him in some undisclosed location. Immediately, Chavez supporters took to the streets. They surrounded the Presidential Palace and demanded the return of their president. Within days, supporters of Chavez within the miltary were able to re-capture the Presidential Palace, rescue Chavez and end the coup. Interestingly, all of this was caught on film, giving us one of the most dramatic and inspiring pieces of revolutionary cinema in recent years. Hugo Chavez is not only an Pan-Americanist but is also a Pan-Africanist as his recent appearance and comments at the African Union's Summit, held in Gambia in June of this year proves. There he extolled his African Brothers and Sisters to come together to fight the forces of globalism and Euro/american hegemony in the world. He reminded them given Africas resources, they should be the wealthiest people in the world, but do to the forces of globalism and imperialism, Africans remain poor while their resources are plundered and used to make others rich. The Revolution Will Not Be Televised is a powerful film, about a powerful Brother, with a powerful message. It brings to life the words of our recently fallen comrade Michael Zinzin, "A people united can never be defeated". This event will be hosted by CEMOTAP-West: Committee to Eliminate Media Offensive to African People For more information call 323-281-1331
