*** School Security and College Prep are Biggest Concerns for South LA

*** School Security and College Prep are Biggest Concerns for South LA

GUESTS: Joshua Bush, Interim Director of South Central Youth Empowered
Thru Action (part of the Community Coalition, Diana Escobar and Joseph
Walker from Manual Arts High School

Yesterday, students from the group, ?South Central Youth Empowered Thru
Action? presented to the head of LA?s School board the results of a peer
based survey of 6,000 students. The youth, along with parents, met with
Los Angeles Unified School District board president Monica Garcia, to
address important issues affecting education in South LA high schools
including concerns about campus safety and college preparation.
Yesterday?s forum, called ?The Uncensored Truth,? revealed that only 27%
of South LA students feel safe at school. The peer-to-peer survey also
noted that more than half of student respondents felt that their school
wasn?t doing enough to prepare them for college. These findings correlate
with a LAUSD internal audit that found that the district was failing to
implement its college preparatory A through G standards. Ever since Garcia
became board president less than two years ago, she has acknowledged the
shortcomings of the nation?s second largest school district. Yesterday?s
forum gave her and all others on hand, the opportunity to hear from
students themselves.

for Josh.
