Title: Veronza Bowers Held Hostage by Federal Prison System!

Time Frame: 1 Month

Plan of Action:
Specific action requests include the concrete support of Bro. Bowers' legal defense team; the concrete support of Bro. Bowers himself; and to substantially increase the level of involvement of freedom-loving people globally in spreading the word about this despicable travesty.

Purpose of Action:
Support Veronza Bowers, Jr. who remains in prison 18 months past the expiration of a 30-year sentence he has already completed.

Scheduled for mandatory parole on April 7, 2004, Veronza Bowers, Jr. was a model prisoner that prison officials showered with praise in the past. Mandatory parole is a requirement by statute after a prisoner has completed his full sentence if there is a record of positive institutional and if one cannot consider the inmate a "threat to society" upon release. Four different Parole Examiners, as well as the U.S. Parole Commission (USPC) itself, the most powerful parole authority in the nation, agreed that Mr. Bowers has complied with these prerequisites. In spite of this, just minutes before his April 7th release, the USPC rescinded his parole at the request of a law enforcement lobby group known as the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), which claimed to have evidence that Bowers had violated prison rules.

At a subsequent hearing, the court dismissed FOP claims as unsubstantiated and a new parole date was set. But, the FOP then lobbied the U.S. Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales, to intervene and, as a result, Mr. Bowers has languished in prison over 18 months past his scheduled release date.

Mr. Bowers' conviction occurred during the FBI's infamous COINTELPRO operations, which used covert and illegal actions to eradicate civil rights, political and peace organizations. On October 6th, 2005 the five members of the U.S. Parole Commission met at the request of the U.S. Attorney General. They upheld the U.S. Attorney General's request to deny Veronza Bowers parole and to keep him indefinitely in prison.

Like filthy, disease-carrying cockroaches, this system prefers to do its dirt under cover of darkness. Like in countless other situations, it has been the voices and actions of righteous people that freed those incarcerated unjustly by shining light on their dirty work.

TOGETHER, we can help force the U.S. Parole Commission and the federal prison system honor its obligation to let Veronza Bowers go free.

Please accept this letter of support for release of Veronza Bowers as there is no legal reason to prolong his imprisonment. Mr. Bowers has served his mandated sentence as a result of his conviction and did so as a model prisoner. Despite, his model behavior Mr. Bowers has endured harsh and undeserved treatment during the 30+ years he has served. He is a respected elder in our community and is not at risk of committing any crime. Further, any mention of his past political associations is not legal grounds to deny his parole. To do so would be an outrage, disgrace, and a violation of constitutional and God-given rights. According to the U.S. Parole Commission laws, Mr. Bowers can neither be denied on the basis of the severity of the original crime.

Mr. Bowers is sorely missed by his community, friends, family, and loved ones with whom he deserves to spend the rest of his years. Keeping him imprisoned would not be an act of justice or rehabilitation but rather a blatant act of political revenge and racism. He has suffered long enough and has served his time peacefully and humbly without complaint.

I have reviewed Mr. Bowers’s background and stand by my decision to support him. I urge the U.S. Parole Commission to hold true the very laws the rest of us are expected to abide by and grant Veronza Bowers his freedom.

Objetivo de Acción
Apoyar a Veronza Bowers, Jr. que permanece en prisión aun 18 meses después de la expiración de su sentencia a 30 años que ya ha completado.

La libertad condicional obligatoria estaba prevista para el 7 de Abril de 2004. Veronza Bowers era un recluso modelo al que le llovÃ*an elogios de los oficiales de prisión en el pasado. La libertad condicional obligatoria es un requisito por estatuto una vez que un recluso ha completado su sentencia, si hay un historial de conducta positivo y si no no se considera que el preso es una “amenaza para la sociedadâ€� tras su puesta en libertad. Cuatro examinadores de Libertad Condicional diferentes, asÃ* como la propia Comisión de Libertad Condicional de los EE.UU. (USPC), la autoridad mas poderosa de la nación en cuanto a este permiso, todos ellos estuvieron de acuerdo en que Mr Bowers cumplÃ*a con todos estos prerequisitos. A pesar de esto, unos minutos antes de su salida el 7 de Abril, el USPC anuló el permiso por solicitud del grupo de presión (lobby) de agentes de la ley conocidos como la Orden Fraternal de la PolicÃ*a (FOP), que alegaron tener pruebas de que Bowers habÃ*a violado las reglas de la prisión.

En una audiencia posterior, la corte desestimó la reclamación del FOP por ser inconsistente y se estableció una nueva fecha de permiso. Pero entonces, el FOP presionó al Abogado General de los EE.UU., Alberto Gonzales, para que interviniese y, como resultado, Mr. Bowers languidece en la cárcel 18 meses despues de su fecha de salida establecida.

La condena de Mr. Bowers ocurrió durante las operaciones del infame programa del FBI, COINTELPRO , que actuaba ilegal y encubiertamente para erradicar las organizaciones polÃ*ticas por la paz y por los derechos civiles.
