DECEMBER 2005 ACTION ALERT
Main Page of This Alert: December 2005 Action Alert, Assata Shakur Speaks
TITLE:Morehouse Police Beat Up Civil Rights Leader!
TIME FRAME: 1 Month
PLAN OF ACTION:
Contact Morehouse College and Morehouse Police Department and demand that an act of police brutality perpetrated against civil rights icon Mukasa Dada (Willie Ricks) are corrected and that he is compensated for his injuries.
Protest Police Brutality!
PURPOSE OF ACTION:
Rectify an act of police brutality against Mukasa Dada, formerly named Willie Ricks, creator of the term "Black Power" and pioneering civil rights activist.
Morehouse police beat up Civil Rights Leader and Elder, Mukasa Dada former known as Willie Ricks of Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), on Thursday, November 10, 2005 at Morehouse College. As a Field Secretary for SNCC and overall freedom fighter for Black people in general, we feel this attack by Morehouse Police is dishonorable, appallingly contradictory, and a slap in the face to all Black Leadership past, present, and future. Mukasa Dada’s history in the civil rights movement, Black power movement, and all Black progressive movements is impeccable. Not only did Mukasa Dada popularize the chant of “Black Power” but he also is highly spoken of by other civil rights leaders.

"Cowardice asks the question: is it safe? Expediency asks the question: is it political? Vanity asks the question: is it popular? But conscience asks the question: is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor political, nor popular - but one must take it simply because it is right."

I went down to Morehouse today to interview any of the "Public Saftey" officers about Mukassa. First, they denied knowing who and what I was talking about. Once they realized that I wasn't leaving, they told me that they weren't "...releasing any statements at this time." Has Morehouse released any information on what charges they are holding our elder on?

Passed out flyers in class on Monday, had a brief discussion with the classmates before class about the incident.
Teacher instructed the students to write letters to Massey about the situation and to bring them to class today.
Today will get information on organizations to help disseminate the information. Will also search for independent media sources here in Houston and send out information to them.
Peace.

peace family,
i will send out a letter and an email to notify and encourage my peoples to do the same. but i have some questions which can perhaps be answered by some ATL folk.
i watched the interview and i kept and keep asking myself what happened??!! where were the students when our elder was being harassed and then abused? were the Morehouse brothers while our elder was getting beat and insulted??? i work at ,and spend a lot of my time, on a university campus and for the most part there are usually students and staff around. especially if the Elder was present during lunch time in the cafeteria, where was the community? i just don't understand, colleges are not private places. why didn't folks step up and not allow Baba Dada to be bullied into a back ally? shoot, i always stop and surveill when i see the po-po attempting to harass my folks on the street. i stand aside as witness and support for so called strangers so where were the students that Baba Dada had shared his spirit with? where was the faculty that know him well? these are not rhetorical questions nor do i seek to call Dada's rendering of the incident into question. but what does the conscious community of Morehouse have to say for itself??? what are they doing to demand justice?
sorry to be so insistent, but this incident on a Black College campus filled with Black men seems extra crazy to me. i don't think i am being naive, i overstand how bourgie and Eurocentric Black colleges can be but beating an Elder in broad daylight, that's too much to reason. so please fill me in.
