The Wrongful Conviction of Jamie and Gladys Scott

With Nathaniel X Vance circulating petitions and vowing to bury Nancy Lockhart, this has unfortunately become a very divisive issue. As a moderator of the Official Free the Scott Sisters Campaign, the vitriolic correspondence that Nathaniel X Vance has used to not *UNITE* the Campaign but to divide it deserves a response.

Nancy Lockhart is a legal analyst who is working on wrongful convictions. While the effort to build a strong discussion group presents a challenge, as well as the real work to free the Scott Sisters (among others) from a racist, wrongful conviction, that in no way diminishes her dedication and level of competence. Mrs Evelyn Rasco, who is the mother of Gladys and Jamie Scott, has complete confidence in Nancy Lockhart's ability and style of work.

In fact, Mrs Rasco views NXV as a disruptive individual. Bringing name calling and disrespect to the Campaign, Vance seems to think that because our people live under the system of monopoly domination and control that he must be in a competition to be King of the Hill. This is a very damaging perception to bring to the liberation movement. He actually has stated, in the correspondence that I emailed to members of his group, how he aims to smash the Official Campaign within one year. Obviously, that will in no way strengthen our movement, and for that reason I have characterized him as a police agent, because that is how we perceive enemies of our struggle.

Now I do not kno if Nathaniel X Vance has mental problems or if he is a sociopath. I intercepted these correspondences that he has attempted to post on the Official Free the Scott Sisters site on yahoo groups, and responded accordingly. Moderators on his site have not posted my reply. However, we will not be afraid to let people kno what is relevant and how we can build this Campaign to Free the Scott Sisters. We are unafraid to let people kno that without Nancy Lockhart's effort very few people would kno about the Scott Sisters. Nancy Lockhart took this the Campaign around the country (NXV learned about the Scott Sisters from her). Now NXV wants to take it over. Like the US taking over Haiti, or saving Somalia, or liberating Panama or Grenada. Creating a disaster.

So please continue to support the Scott Sisters Campaign. Only, be aware that we have to make hard, clear decisions about where we stand at times. And this is one of those times.

Nathaniel X Vance is sending out e-mails to hundreds of places about the Scott Sisters and Nancy Lockhart, but I don't know who he is. I have tried to contact this man and he will not respond to me at all. How can he represent me or my girls when I don't even know him? He is getting people confused real bad and needs to stop. It's not right for someone to come and just start using your loved ones' name, that doesn't make any sense!

Nathaniel X Vance made up a press release with his name on it as the contact person and with mistakes in it and sent it all over, but we already have a press release with the right information in it and the right contact person. Then he made up a petition and put his name on it and has people signing that one instead of the petition we already have! It doesn't make sense to have more than one petition or a press release with wrong information in it or somebody trying to do a power act or whatever he is doing, it is not fair!

We have Free the Scott Sisters so everybody could find these things easily, Nathaniel X Vance is not the contact person for anyone other than himself. Now he is even trying to get people to stop sending us donations and send them to him at his own Paypal, that is fraud, he can't do that! We already have a Paypal and are struggling very hard and pay for most things that we do for the girls out of our own pockets. Nancy Lockhart has not made one single dime from anything that she has done for the Scott Sisters, not anything at all! For him to say something evil like that about her proves that he is really just trying to hurt us for no good reason!

It is this justice system that should be made to free Jamie and Gladys and stop trying to destroy our whole family, that's what we should be talking about. The only person that I trust to help me is Nancy Lockhart. I just want this Nathaniel X man to stop. My girls are dying in that prison cell daily and I am not in good health at all myself. They have five kids that all have some type of emotional problems due to the fact of what has happened to their mothers. They have been asked all of their lives, why does your grandmother have you, and when they tell people they can't believe that you can get a double life sentence and you have not touched anyone or held a weapon, and the victims said that in open court. I live in a depressed state of mind but my whole world revolves around these kids and with their grandchildren. Sometimes I have 10 kids here in a day and I take care of them any way i can. I pray to God to give us the strength to go on everyday. We don't need all of this foolishness to confuse people and make things even worse for my girls. Thank you for reading my letter.

Whatever people feel about "moon bombs" and UFOs, Nathaniel X Vance combines/confuses his interests in those topics with the more critical down-to-earth, struggles for life. Do not sit on the fence in matters like this and watch the slugfest; we should not have to wage these battles with this much intensity. Please help resolve this struggle by letting Nathaniel X Vance and his crew kno that dividing the Movement will not succeed. NXV is a jonny-come-lately to a piece that Sister Nancy Lockhart has carried on her broad shoulders for the past five years. Now he hopes to usurp her work, inbetween chasing unicorns or whatever. Mr. Holder's office has not responded to our formal complaint(s) and the Civil Rights Division has responded to Mrs. Rasco saying that they cannot assist because the case has passed the statutory limits/deadline of 5 years. I am writing to request that you investigate the case of Jamie and Gladys Scott. The Scott Sisters were given double life sentences each in October of 1994 for armed robbery in the state of Mississippi. No one was injured or murdered. One witness states that about 11 dollars was netted in the armed robbery. All witnesses and victims of this crime have testified that the Scott Sisters were not involved in the robbery. Witnesses testified that they were coerced and threatened to lie on the Scott Sisters.

A 14 year old witness testified that he signed a statement which was prepared for him before he entered Deputy Sheriff Marvin Williams' Office. This statement was signed by the 14 year old without an attorney present. He was told that he would be released from the local jail the next morning if he signed it. He was not released.

This is an egregious wrongful conviction and the Scott Sisters have suffered now 14 years 8 months of double life sentences.


Jamie and Gladys Scott are housed in Pearl, Mississippi. Their ID numbers are Jamie Scott #19197 and Gladys Scott # 19142.

9/4/09 URGENT MEDICAL UPDATE!

Jamie Scott is a diabetic with high blood pressure and her
mother, Mrs. Rasco, was recently informed that she has not been
receiving her medications. Jamie requires two insulin shots
per day, regular sugar checks, as well as pills for her blood
pressure. Mrs. Rasco is fearful for her daughter's life!

Many of us have been calling the prison today to try and
reach someone to discuss this with and have been
getting the runaround.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! We must get Jamie seen by medical staff
ASAP to ascertain her medical condition. Here is her current

Mrs. Rasco received an emergency call at 6:00 a.m. from inside the prison
regarding her daughter, JAMIE SCOTT #19197.

She was told that oil was placed in the shower which caused to Jamie
to fall and that she was taken away. No one knows how badly she may
be hurt, or even where she is!

WHERE IS JAMIE SCOTT?

When i called the prison (Central Mississippi Corrections Facility)
at (601) 932-2880, i was told by a Nurse Wilson that no one, not even the
inmate's mother, could be told whether or not Jamie Scott is in one
of their hospital beds! i was told that the only other person i could speak to
about it is Paxton Paige when he returned from holiday on Tuesday, and
that he would tell me the exact same thing.

Calls have been made to the local hospital where prisoners are taken when
they need treatment outside of the facility, but Jamie Scott has not been
admitted there.

Mrs. Rasco needs to get answers some kind of way before Tuesday! We
were already aware of a health emergency for Jamie and with this
additional news we need to not only ascertain whether she is receiving
her medications, but if she has suffered injuries and if so, what they are,
and if she is receiving proper medical attention for them.

Any support that can be offered would be greatly appreciated!

JAMIE SCOTT/SCOTT SISTERS UPDATES (9/18)

Warm Greetings all,

Mrs. Evelyn Rasco and Jamie Scott's 18 yr. old son, Terrance, have been speaking out on blogtalk radio and are very grateful for any and all support! On 9/18 Bro. Ronald Herd, II, did a dynamic program with Mrs. Rasco, Terrance, and Bro. Chokwe Lumumba, who called in at about 45 mins. into the show. Bro. Lumumba shared his perspective on the case and strongly urged that calls, letters, mass media promotion, and rallies in Mississippi (such as that being planned by the MWM) be organized to build large numbers of supporters and put continuous pressure on the system there. Bro. Lumumba pointed out that this case stands out as being unique among the many others in that the charge is so "mickey mouse" in relationship to the horrific sentencing that these women received (double-life each). He also educated listeners on the responsibility of Black/New Afrikan people as potential jurors in the court system, and much more. This show is archived at Tha Artivist Presents...W.E. A.L.L. B.E. Mrs. Rasco received the troubling news yesterday (9/17) that even though we were told that Jamie Scott had been moved to the Medical Bldg. at the prison, she in fact was not. Although Jamie did receive her medications thanks to the efforts of the many people who called and wrote, she continues to be held in a repressive bldg. under severe restrictions with all of the privileges she has earned for 14+ yrs completely stripped away, including school, work, the law library and church. This is significant in that, once again, the punishment does not fit the alleged "crime" of being in the gymnasium when she was not supposed to be, although she was admitted into there by staff. This is a political move because other inmates with similar infractions receive nowhere near the level of the punishment Jamie has been dealt, particularly since she has had no previous write-ups in all these many years!

We continue to need your assistance in addressing this serious issue, as Jamie is terrified that she will be attacked in the bldg. she has been moved to. She is still recovering from illness due to lack of meds and is additionally very depressed and anxious. Please call and write these officials and let them know that Jamie Scott, #19197, needs to have her privileges reinstated and be returned to a more appropriate building and level of custody for someone with her previously blemish-free record.

Jamie Scott of the Scott Sisters continues to have all of the privileges revoked that she earned over almost 15 yrs. of unjust incarceration simply for going into the gym to use the bathroom without authorization. She remains isolated from all activities within the prison. Despite her efforts to seek relief, she has been unable to regain those privileges due to harassment from Deputy Warden Winkel. Jamie has been a model inmate in every aspect of prison life with no write-ups for all of these years. In fact, Vocational Education Director, Pat Owen, wrote of Jamie's work as a tutor in the literacy program: "Inmate Scott has proven herself to be dependable, hard working, and conscientious. She has demonstrated much patience and compassion in working with lower-level students. Her work at the school has been exemplary."

9/09 -- JAMIE SCOTT SPEAKS about the circumstances surrounding the removal of her privileges and transfer to a more punitive building.

I have been on the grounds of CMCF for 15 years. Everyone thinks when you come to prison, you come to be rehabilitated. Well, that's a lie. Policy 20-05 states we are not to be discriminated against. Let's be real. Policy is a joke around here. All staff members are not low down and abusive with their authority but many are.

Things happen here and the inmate is not always at fault, but we are the ones who get punished for it. The reason I know this is I was locked down on June 23 for being in an unauthorized area. Now, this area was the gym, a place that was supposed to be locked. I was locked down for 23 days and received an RVR after 22 days. Policy 18-01-01 says that you have 24 hours to write a rule violation report after an incident happens. On my detention notice, it clearly states that Warden Winkel observed me in the gym. She locked me down and served me the RVR after 22 days had passed stating, "Upon completion of the investigation, it was determined I, Jamie Scott, was in an unauthorized area," but this was determined on June 23, 2009 at 5:20 p.m. Deputy Winkel used her position and authority to pay me back for an incident that happened when she was under investigation. She made me do 23 days in lock down, took away my custody level and took away any job I had. Many inmates have gone to lock down for worse offenses, came back out, and went back to the school and to work.

Commissioner Christopher Epps has no clue what really goes on. When he visits the prison, they cover a lot of things up so he won't find out. The gym is supposed to be for us, the inmates, but we have not had gym call in months. It's not because the Director, Richard Caston, won't let us, but because some of the staff use the gym to exercise, for their personal use.

I was wrong for being in the gym, I admit that. I deserve to be treated fairly like the next offender. Policy is supposed to apply to all inmates and staff. I did 23 days in lock down, but to take my custody level down and then tell staff members I can't work anymore is just too much. I have no history of disciplinary problems through all of these years. I have even been banned from Choir practice and the Tour Speaking Group. The Deputy Warden and Lt. Burton have ordered the supervisor to terminate me from the church. Policy 20-05-01 states that inmates have a right not to be discriminated against and that staff will not subject offenders from personal abuse or harassment [4-4281].

11/2/09 SCOTT SISTERS UPDATE!

Jamie Scott has written extensively about the conditions of her unjust
incarceration and recently submitted an update to share on behalf of
herself as well as all of the women in the bldg. where she is being housed.

First, she remains grateful for all of the calls, e-mails and letters
that went out on her behalf before, she is in a slightly improved situation.
She is now under a warden who is treating her more fairly and has a
job in the kitchen and so is finally able to at least get some time
off of the unit.

Her main concern is the building itself, and states that it's the worst
conditions she has ever lived in. She and others are in the part of
the prison called "quickbed" because it was built so fast. It was
only supposed to be built to empty the county jails and is not fit
for humans to live in. When it rains, it rains directly into the unit.
Mold is knee deep in the showers and they are unsafe with rain
everywhere. The building has not had hot water for over a month
and some of the women do not bathe at all. Jamie, herself, is
sick with a bad cold as a result of bathing in cold water. They
are supposed to have two microwave ovens there but don't have
any, so they are unable to even heat up water to bathe with.
When they ask the warden about this terrible situation, they are
told that it is being worked on. Furthermore, she reports that
the beds are not five feet from each other, when the policy states
they are supposed to be farther apart.

TIME YOU GO OUT!!

With the level of activities picking up, the Scott Sisters need to have a voice
and be represented as fully as possible!

We're calling on everyone to please participate in helping to distribute
Scott Sisters flyers at upcoming marches, rallies, speaking events, and
wherever people will be at so that their case can receive as much publicity
as possible.

But don't stop there!

Keep some flyers in your car and/or bag to hand to people or even to
send out. Drop some off at churches, temples, hair shops, and even
your local clubs and hangouts, wherever you can imagine!

With no resources, our mission has to be to do everything that we can
so that we know within ourselves that we did our best to make sure
that we informed as many people as we could possibly reach that this
truly atrocious case exists. These women have been suffering in prison
for 15 years and counting for no good reason while they watch
people around them be released who were convicted of murder!!

Together we can make their freedom a reality!! And what a fantastic day that will be!

Warm Greetings,

Jamie Scott and others have reported that last week there were protestors out in
front of the capitol building with signs on local TV talking about the conditions in
their prison!! For two days there were news reports about the lack of medical care,
the way that they live, and their treatment by staff.

The hot water has now been fixed in the building and Jamie wants to very
sincerely thank everyone for everything they are doing, not only to help support
the Scott Sisters, but also the women of that building. They want someone
in authority to come and visit there during a rainy day so that they can witness
for themselves the way that the rain pours into the unit.

Jamie submitted an excellent list of general issues in that prison so that
everything she knows of is thoroughly outlined and all in one place,
and this listing has been posted at

and will be updated regularly by Jamie.

Our main goals remain two-fold:
1. Obtaining a lawyer for this case.
2. Obtaining mainstream publicity for this case.

Mrs. Rasco is desperately in need of legal support at this point in time and
we have hit many dead ends in our search for someone to advise us on how
best to proceed in bringing the Scott Sisters home. We definitely appreciate
all of your ideas! Please use the materials on the blogspot site and
forward them to wherever they could be most helpful in achieving our main
goals, we need and appreciate your active support! Always feel free to

These politicians need to receive information on these wrongfully
