Special alert from the new black panther party

THE NEW BLACK PANTHER PARTY

THE OFFICE OF THE CHIEF OF STAFF

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPECIAL NEWARK TOWN HALL MEETING WINDS DOWN
BUSY OCTOBER FOR NEW PANTHERS

On Wednesday evening, October 27th, the New Black Panther party, along with the Uhuru Movement, will close out a busy month of October with a special town hall meeting on Wednesday evening, October 27th at Essex County College. This hardhitting event will focus on ‘The State Of Black Newark’ and will feature a cross section of grassroot community leaders and city officials, including Deputy Mayor Ras Baraka, Lawrence Hamm of the Peoples Organization for Progress (POP), Rev. Joe A. Carter, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, Min. Lawrence Muhammad of the Nation Of Islam, representatives from Saving Our Selves, a moving story of former so-called ‘gang’ members organizing peace initiatives on the streets and positive community service projects, and the fiery Donna Jackson, a long time outspoken education activist.

The event will be held at will be Essex County College’s auditorium, Room 2131. The event will be held from 6-9p.m. Free Admission.

“Some familiar and not so familiar voices who deserve to be heard on the matter of our people’s true needs in this city will be given a platform to speak,” explained

On Thursday, October 7th, the national ministry of culture and countless others, converged on Newark City Hall to demand that the City of Newark rename a major street in honor of legendary Newark native Amiri Baraka’s lifelong commitment to the city. October 7th was Baraka’s 70th birthday.

The Party insisted that the City of Newark’s official recognition be done in a way that is “permanent, practical and prominent.” In addition to naming a major street after the prolific author and revolutionary activist, the party, along with Frederica Bey of Women In Support Of The Million Man March, Lawrence Hamm of POP, Aminifu Williams of REFAL and Dorothea Moore of the Frances EW Harper Literary Society, among others, proposed that a Newark Room be created at the Newark Public Library, similar to its New Jersey Room. That Newark Room would be named after Baraka and would be the repository the complete Amiri Baraka Papers Collection and would become the premiere database for information about the city of Newark. The commissioning of a major public work of art dedicated to Baraka was also suggested. Finally, they called for the creation of city-based center to train and develop local artists preferably in the old ‘coast’ district.

On Thursday, October 14th, the Party observed the 38th anniversary of the Black Panther Party with a special showing of a moving document, A Panther In Afrika, which showcases the odyssey of former Kansas City-based Black Panther Pete O’Neal who was into exile. He is shown fully participating in the community life of the Tanzanian village he has since made his home.

Wow! 70th earthday... I hope the demand to house Amiri's "complete collection" of papers etc has been well thought through.

Tho the idea to keep'em easily accessable to a seeking public, to me to do so gives the gov't treasures to do with what pleases it.

Right now we're having big static protecting Dr. John Henrik Clarke's already dubbed a "Special Collection." Without a commited caretaker, the works will slowly disappear! He willed his to Clark Atlanta University.

However this does point to another need of our people: our own places to house our folk's literary works for the children, etc. Similar to the Schomburg in Harlem. Tho connected to the NYC Library System, its in private property and operated by Black Folk.

My struggle sista, TyreeA - u kno I'm at your service; do what u think best. But I don't have any questions; I'm pleased that folk are concerned about Amiri, as a youngster I asked to watch him work at his craft; he agreed and unknowingly convinced me I didn't have what it takes to b an author, etc. DAt brutha was at the typewriter surrounded by books for days! In those days there were no word processors, internet a WWW; cell "phones" (i still don't kno y these called phones; there're walkie talkie radios; any bum on da streets can intercept transmission and reception; just as onda move tractor trailer drivers, passing cabbies, etc) were non-existent; info was spread via grapevines and America was bouncing up & down, spin'n 'round not really knowing which way to turn; social unrest and revolution was in the hearts and minds of musicians, singers, actors/actresses, writers, workers, high schoolers & college kids; corner hang'n bloods, mamas and poppas - even wino bums onda streets of lower East Side Manhattan. That's what I told Amiri I'd write about... ain't done it yet...oh well - onward we march, huh? u remember? Doesn't "seem" datta way today, but conditions remain constant; different faces, same races.

'cuse the reminiscenc'n.

Peace and Love Baba...

It is up to YOU. I will if you want me to,, You know how to find me.. LOL

Q: Why allow anyone to tell you what you can and can't do?

I ask that same question of the babies in my circle. I say to them "The CREATOR and You are the Queens/Kings of your destiny. When you find the thing that makes your spirit soar, that is the thing that you should do, cause it is a gift from The CREATOR. And if you like some thing you will make $$ on it cause you will not begrudge the time you gotta spend on yah craft cause you enjoy it, and it will not seem a chore."

I just told my 14 year old youngest GOD-Son that same thing last week, while he was doing his thing,,, visual art! And here I am repeating the same thing to my Elder. You allowed some one to dimish your light.

Ok, so here we are some odd years later loving the computer and the net and the ways we can vibe with each other.. but you still haven't done what you wanted to do,, get the real deal on paper or whatever it was you wanted to do.

PLEASE BABA, think about doing it NOW,,for me and the rest of us who know your value and worth to the community and do the thing.

Please....

I have a Big Brother who has a serious personal history with one of our Historic Brothers and when he told me his history, I emplored him to write it down for history. He said "I don't type well".. My response was.. "Get a hand held tape recorder and talk into it and we can get some one to type it up and you can edit it and.. IF you want you can publish it and write a book... BUT you gotta get it on tape at the min.

Two years later, after his children said I was right in my suggestion, he got a tape recorder for his notes, but I bet yah he don't have 5 hours on tape. He is not one to sit and just talk into a tape recorder. LOL

Like you,, he has "too many things to do, than talk into a tape recorder." LOL but I would implore youto do the same if you don't feel that you can just open Word and just make notes and flesh them out and flesh them out some more and edit and flesh and edit and flesh and edit and then publish.

Asante sana TyreeA - I poorly worded my response; Amiri didn't tell me not to write; he wasn't aware of what I was thinking after scoping him work; he encouraged me; in fact told me: to b a writer, write! Besides he wasn't the only writer I knew or was around. 'preciate your advice, tho... It's strange, too that u take the time to encourage me; I bugged some of our passed on relatives, all over 70, to let me record their stories. Now that's a family goal, to put OurStory into print... mainly for our coming descendants. Mine will blend in with their's. I feel u; everyone has a story to tell; but I'm of a mind that those who put their's into public view can help their "audience" by showing in their works the lives touched, inspired via his or her works. To be educators not so much teachers. Which reminds me, I'm about to post an introduction to Mwalimu K. Bomani Baruti's latest fresh from his publishing "press." Its titled, ASAFO, A Warrior's Guide to MANHOOD. Tune into Baba Speaks.
