NEW PANTHERS HOST NIGHT OF SOLIDARITY
WITH ASSATA SHAKUR

On Monday, November 7th, ‘Black Solidarity Day,’ in the spirit of the emerging Millions More Movement, the New Black Panther Party will host an evening of ‘Love and Solidarity with Assata Shakur.�

Shakur, the much-maligned Joanne Chesimard in law enforcement circles, was liberated from a New Jersey prison on November 2, 1979. She had been serving a life sentence after having been convicted for the death of state trooper Werner Foerster in a May 2, 1973 incident that left her critically wounded and left another Panther, Zayd Shakur, also dead.

Shakur has always maintained her innocence, and in spite of presenting physical evidence corroborating her version of the incident at her trial, she and co-defendant Sundiata Acoli were convicted by an all-white jury for Foerster’s death.

Since her liberation from prison, Shakur has lived in asylum in Cuba. On May 2nd, the anniversary of the Turnpike Incident, the State of New Jersey and the U.S. Justice Department increased their bounty on Shakur’s head from $100,000 to $1 million. The move sparked protests throughout the country including several by the New Black Panther Party in New Jersey.

The event will review the incident and will examine what might be done to challenge the bounty. Community leaders from the area will be on-hand in the spirit of unity generated by the Millions More Movement.

“Just as the state is obsessed with Assata being captured or killed, we are as obsessed about justice for her and so many of her comrades still languishing in prison after so many years,� explained a passionate Zayid Muhammad, the party’s national minister of culture and a long-time friend and supporter of Shakur.
