THE NEW BLACK PANTHER PARTY NATIONAL MINISTRY OF CULTURE PO BOX 25332 , NEWARK , NJ 07101 201-602-0780 May 14, 2008 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MALCOLM’S B-DAY WEEKEND HOT FOR NEW PANTHERS “WILL PEOPLES POWER SAVE MUHLENBERG HOSPITAL ?!... On Saturday, May 17th, the New Black Panther Party’s national minister of culture, Zayid Muhammad, will be among the legions of people marching to save Plainfield , New Jersey ’s Muhlenberg Hospital from closing. The march is being organized and led by Steven Hatcher and the Plainfield chapter of the Peoples Organization for Progress (POP) and will begin at the corners of E. Front Street and Park Avenue in downtown Plainfield at 12 noon. Muhlenberg’s closing will mark the 21st closing of a hospital in the area in recent years, all in cities or towns with Black majority populations. Although he has been based in the Newark area for some time, Muhammad is a Plainfield native. His late aunt Thelma Lambert trained nurses at the hospital for decades. “Steven Hatcher and POP deserve supreme credit for this valiant uphill struggle, but more importantly for bringing this city together like it hasn’t been in decades,” Muhammad implored. “Inspite of this happening in a chocolate city, Steve has brought together Black folks, white folks, clergy, politicians, elders and the young, the way no one has in a long time. What’s happening here could become a grassroots movement for how to help other cities face this challenge as the health care crisis continues to drain and deprive our communities,” he finished. For more information about the march, please call 908-731-1518… ‘X’ IZ THE ANSWER! MALCOLM IZ WORD!... Later that evening, the Harlem chapter of the New Black Panther Party will co-host a hip hop concert to honor the birthday of Malcolm X at the historic National Black Theatre, located at 125th Street and 5th Avenue in Harlem . The event, produced by Maroon Records, will feature Maroon recording artists like revolutionary rapper Nat Turner, Divine Allah and young poet Autumn Ashanti. Allah is the Party’s national youth minister. chairman. The event will also feature United Front, the Harlem Six and many more. Admission is $7.00 and will rock from 8-Midnight. “Bloodsuckers may have hijacked commercial hip hop with the negativity, but hip hop still has an underground railroad that is still revolutionary and raw and we’ve got commandos all up in that mix,” beamed Muhammad, himself a well-regarded poet and artist. For more information, please call 917-420-8662… . HONOR MALCOLM! RAIZE HELL FOR SEAN BELL! Monday, May 19th marks the 83rd anniversary of the birth of Malcolm X. The Malcolm X Commemoration Committee (MXCC) and the Sons & Daughters of Afrika will again host the annual pilgrimage to Malcolm’s gravesite. Buses will depart from the Harlem State Office Building at 125th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard at 10:00 a.m. for Ferncliff Cemetary in Ardsley , New York where Malcolm and Betty are now both interned together. Bus trip donations are $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for children. Family discounts are available, but must be made in advance. Call 718-949-5153 or 212-928-5165 for reservations and information. The pilgrimage was initially conceived and organized by the late Ella Little-Collins, Malcolm’s indomitable sister. For over 40 years, the pilgrimage has been faithfully observed and honored by Baba James Small. In 1993, recognizing its enormous cultural significance, the Malcolm X Commemoration Committee became co-sponsor and expanded its participation. Since then, participants have travelled from as far away as Detroit , Michigan . In 2000, Baba Small asked Zayid Muhammad, area leader of the New Black Panther Party, who also is the MXCC’s longtime press officer, if the Party would serve as the gravesite ceremony’s honor guard. It is a function that that Party has faithfully and proudly played ever since. This year’s pilgrimage, done in conjunction with the annual closing of the stores on Harlem’s 125th Street by the December 12th Movement, takes on added gravity in the aftermath of the acquittal of the police killers of Sean Bell. “I sincerely hope area business cooperate and recognize what time it is because if they don’t, they could make themselves fat targets in future possible boycotts done to make the city pay for Sean Bell,” Muhammad said… SHUT’EM DOWN! NO MORE LIQUOR STORES IN OUR ‘HOOD! Looking ahead, on Saturday, June 14th, the New Black Panther Party will rally with legions of Bergen Street area residents to protest the opening of a liquor store and establishment on the corner of Bergen Street and Custer Avenue , right in the heart of Newark ’s south ward. The rally will include a march and will be held from 12 noon to 5p.m. at Bergen and Hawthorne . Months ago, a merchant from outside of the area applied to the city for a permit to open a liquor store and establishment. When he was confronted with wide well-organized opposition from the community, he then applied for a permit to open a check cashing business instead, but once he secured approval for that, he then began to renovate the location for the liquor establishment he originally opted for, outraging the community who had already been to the city’s zoning board and city council to properly register their opposition. Since then, people like Carolyn Kelly-Shabazz, who runs the First Class Championship Center on Bergen Street , have rallied their neighbors like Palm Garden Church of the Living God, Gethesemane Church of God In Christ, the Pentecostal Family Prayer Center, United Muslim Inc. and host of area businesses and residents. “We have two schools, a day care center, four churches, a mosque and a whole lot of good people who just don’t that liquor store and all the negativity its going to bring with it in our community,” Kelly-Shabazz railed. Area residents have also already secured the outraged support of city council members Mildred Crump, Donald Payne Jr. and Oscar James II, who joined them at a recent press conference. “I proudly tip my hat to Sis. Carolyn Kelly-Shabazz and to our elders for how they came together. They have done in exemplary fashion what a community is supposed to do to protect the fabric of their neighborhood, and still, in spite of all that, somebody at City Hall is arrogantly and underhandedly turning their backs on them. It’s time to raise hell,” Muhammad observed. For more information about the rally and march, please call 973-318-7013. For more information about the Party, please call 201-602-0780. .. # Angenetta L Robinson 973 809 4604 cell 888 388 8241 pager " Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest."
