On May 2, 2005 the State of New Jersey put a million dollar bounty
for the capture of Assata Shakur. In 1973 political activist Assata
Shakur (Joanne Chesimard) was shot by New Jersey State troopers on
the NJ Turnpike after a car she was driving in was stopped for
a "faulty tail light." After the shooting, a trooper was found dead
as well as Assata's comrade, Zayd Shakur. In 1977 she would be
convicted by an all-white jury for the trooper's murder although
evidence was presented clearing her name. In 1979 she escaped from
a men's maximum security prison and now is a political exile living
in Cuba. On June 4, 2005 thousands of people across the country
will gather together to stop this assault on our sister Assata. Join
us and learn the truth about Assata Shakur and her case's connection
to the political repression of the City of Camden.
