In commemoration of the 26th anniversary of a series of arrests that
began on April 4th, 1980, ProLibertad has dedicated the month of April
to the Puerto Rican Political Prisoners; we call it FREEDOM MONTH!!
This month is full of activities and events to raise awareness about the
Puerto Rican Political Prisoners and to inspire people to join the
movement to free our Freedom fighters!!

We freed the Nationalists in the 1970s!! We freed some of the prisoners
in 1999!! We can make freedom happen again!! JOIN THE MOVEMENT!!

WE CANNOT FORGET OUR PRISONERS!! OSCAR LOPEZ RIVERA, CARLOS ALBNERTO
TORRES AND HAYDEE BELTRAN PRESENTE!!

SOME HISTORY:
Starting on April 4th, 1980, fourteen people accused of being members of
the Armed Forces of National Liberation (FALN, its acronym in Spanish)
were arrested. At the time of their arrest they declared themselves to
be combatants in an anti-colonial war to liberate Puerto Rico from U.S.
domination and invoked prisoner of war status.

They argued that the U.S. courts and its political subdivisions did not
have jurisdiction to try them as criminals and petitioned for their
cases to be handed over to an international, impartial court that would
determine their status. The U.S. government did not recognize their
request. These brothers and sisters became the first crop of Puerto
Rican Political Prisoners to be incarcerated in the 1980s; to be
followed by several members of Los Macheteros in 1985.

In Sept. 1999, President William Clinton granted several of the Puerto
Rican Political Prisoners clemency, but three of these companeros are
still in prison. They are Oscar Lopez Rivera, Haydee Beltran Torres,
and Carlos Alberto Torres!!

For the past 26 years, the international community has called for their
release!! Join the millions of voices that cry out for freedom and
justice!! We need your talent, enthusiasm, creativity, organizing
skills and your energy!! Join ProLibertad!! Contact us at
ProLibertad@Hotmail.com
