| 8/23 Nicholas Naquan Heyward Jr. Remembrance
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Nicholas Heyward Sr. 917-535-0485 or hspirit13@aol.com The Nicholas Naquan Heyward Jr. Memorial Foundation will hold its 14th annual Day of Remembrance on Saturday August 23rd at 1pm Nicholas Naquan Heyward, Jr. was a 13-year-old honor student when a housing police officer shot and killed him while Nicholas was playing cops and robbers in a stairwell in Gowanus Houses. The policeman who killed him was exonerated by the District Attorney and never faced any charges. The Annual Day of Remembrance for Nicholas Naquan Heyward, Jr. is a day that commemorates the life and honors the memory of young Nicholas Jr. on his birthday at the park that was named after him in Boerum Hill Gowanus in Brooklyn. It is an annual community event that Nicholas Jr.'s father began the year after his son was killed, and which the Foundation now helps organize. To help the Nicholas Naquan Heyward Jr. Memorial Foundation bring the spirit of joy and community to the children in the Boerum Hill community, please join us at this year’s Day oF Remembrance and/or donate food, toys, or funds by contacting Nicholas Heyward, Sr. Date: Saturday, August 23, 2008 Place: Nicholas Naquan Heyward Jr. Park Wyckoff Street between Hoyt and Bond Streets Time: 1:00pm All are invited – join in on the fun, food and games! Ø Basketball Games Ø Arts & crafts Ø Voter Registration Ø Face-Painting Ø Jay-Jay the Clown Ø Exchange Toy Guns For Gifts Ø Special Guests Ø Award ceremony in Honor of Dewy Wood The Nicholas Naquan Heyward Jr. Memorial Foundation, Inc. is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization formed in 1995 to create a more positive and self-esteem-reinforcing environment for youth in the community of Boerum Hill and adjacent areas in Kings County: by providing youth mentoring and other programs aimed at creating ties between youth and positive role models in the community, by creating a scholarship fund to help exceptional community youth pay for high school and/or higher education, by providing assistance and youth-targeted programs focusing on the prevention of crime and substance abuse and promoting respect and dignity in the relations between the police and the youth of the community, honoring the memory of Nicholas Naquan Heyward, Jr. by providing the aforementioned charitable programs for community youth and promoting closer ties between community youth and police.
