Juanita Young has been tirelessly fighting for Justice for her son, Malcolm
Ferguson, since his murder by Bronx police officer Louis Rivera in 2000. Last
year a Bronx jury awarded the legally blind grandmother 10-million dollars in
a wrongful death suit (more than her attorneys had asked for) - the city is
appealing -
Juanita is also strong in her support of other families whose kids have died at
the hand of the NYPD joining with other families in Parents Against Police
Brutality and through her work with The October 22 Coalition and The Justice
Committee. But this has made her a hated target of the NYPD - especially the
Bronx's 43rd Pct.

Since Malcolm's killing, Juanita and her kids have been harassed, arrested
and,in some cases, brutalized. in 2003, during the course of an illegal
eviction from her home of 6 years, police pushed the handcuffed woman causing
her to stumble down the stairs and fracture her wrist.. charged with "criminal
trespassing" Young brought suit against the NYPD and won. Refusing to accept an
ACD, Juanita was aquitted of all charges.

Next, she was arrested for "disorderly conduct" during the annual October 22nd
day of Outrage Against Stolen Lives - again refusing to take a plea those
charges were also dismissed.

Then in November 2006 police arrived at her door after a call to 911 EMT's for
help for her teenage daughter suffering emotional turmoil. Juanita fought
against police entering her home saying instead that medical help was needed..
initially the two police left - only to return soon after with at least 6 more
"responding to a call that EMT were in trouble".. what ensued left Juanita
again in handcuffs, arrested and charged this time with resisting
arrest,obstructing governmental administration, harassment, attempted assault
and possession of a weapon (allegedly a dog food can). After many
postponements, The Bronx DA's office again attempted to persuade Juanita Young
to accept an ACD (adjournment contemplating dismissal) making it plain to her
attorneys that if she didn't accept it they were "seeking jail time this time".

Last Wednesday, a jury of was selected. Four cops and an EMS took
the stand Thursday. It was clear to many of us present that they got together
and concocted a story of how Juainta threw 4 or 5 cans of food or dogfood at
their heads and attacked a Sgt. (all this while not being arrested, handcuffed
or shot at the alleged time).

On Wednesday, October 14th Juanita may take the stand and possibly another ems
worker. The judge now says that the trial will probably go to the jury on
Friday.
