I've heard different theories about the origins of the Christmas Tree and they all refer back to pre-Christian European belief systems. Being that Christians didn't have any Earth based festivals, like their 'pagan' subjects, they took the rites and rituals from these Earth religions and just replaced them with something that referenced Christ, i.e.- symbols like the Easter Egg and Easter bunnies(referencing fertility god festival) and Christmas (referencing the Winter Solstace festival). The tree is just another incorporated symbol that Christians owe to indigenous Earth based European belief systems.

I concur with what our elder Mackeyite has said. I would just add that Europeans pagan systems adopted their rituals surrounding the 'Christmas' Tree from the African TREE OF LIFE. The TOL is the system the African created to illustrate the spiritual anatomy of Wo/man. The lights placed on the tree of course are symbolic of the light that comes into the world with the awakening and full functioning of the various aspects of your spirit in the world. So, rather then simply lighting a candle or plugging in some lights on a tree what we should be doing is spiritual work that awakens and brings the light of the various parts of our spirit into the world.
