Peace! I wonder where the notion of "role-model" came from. I was raised. Objectively, parents are role-models, and subjectively, too as it is said that children often fail to do what we say, but never fail to do what we do. Realistically, "American" culture and socializing of children reduces and limits the authority of parents, family structure and discipline. So if role-model is to be taken as another word for 'example', again parents are the example that children follow. The lure of association and copy-catting what is popular or "in" has always existed, what has fallen-away is the guidance and balance that parents used to provide, or seem to not be doing so much of these days. Children and youth need limits and consistency, a safety-net where they can experience the boundaries of youthful exuberance and the tether of being reigned-in when the boundaries have been crossed. IMHO, more than role-models, young people should be told the truth about life and choices, taught lessons about character and morals, and how to tell the real from the superficial, helped to build self-confidence and to know that they are their own competition against their past successes -and above all, LOVE OF SELF. A useful short-cut in life is observing from other's experiences what NOT to do, and if one is clued-in to that perspective, it's a useful tool for character building and choice-making. Critical-thinking skills, I think I am getting at, is at-least needed even if we are going to look for models to emulate or pattern ourselves after. I was always taught that the world was bigger than my neighborhood, city, state and country, so I grew a "worldly" imagination. REACH!

Athletes and entertainers are definately role models. Bad ones that is. The only role models should be the ones that you see the everyday lives of the most. The idea of a role model from the entertainment industry is racist. Since we dont have access to celebrities every day lives they cant be role models. People get trapped in the grasp of the evil one thinking that television and magazines can make us really know these people. Forgotten is the fact the actors on programs actually perform a script written by someone else to earn money. Articles in magazines are written in a certain way to only make money.
