| Should Past Racism be Hidden From Us? I ran across banned cartoons from the 30's and 40's. I personally this that younger generations should be exposed to them. Sellout Negro organizations like NAACP and whites have hidden too much from us on how we were portrayed in movies and cartoons: Dorothy Dandrige's mother Ruby did the voice of Mammy in this cartoon. Coal Black and de Sebben drawfs Minnie the Moocher Little Black Sambo Betty Boop Seven pages of racist cartoons Amos N Andy Americans, and you know which Americans I'm talking about, are trying to sweep the horrors that our ancestors experienced during slavery under the rug. However, Every day you can see something about the Holocaust on TV. Like those Jews.....we should NEVER FORGET either. |

No I don't think past racism should be ignored. However if you are going to show something in the past to the generation of today, you have to do so in the manner of how history repeats itself. Make people realize what their ancestors have gone through, and show it the same principal is going thru today. You have to let people think criticially of what is going on in their life and how the past affects the present, and how their present will affect their future. |

I think it is a shame that these art forms are being swept under the rug. In banning these art forms several things happen. We forget where e came from White folks get themselves off the hook We lose otherwise good and important art People seem to be trying to say that these things never happened, which is a lie. Art forms like Amos N' Andy, Song of the South and Huckleberry Finn are kept from the public depriving people of what is otherwise good art. We miss the hidden treasures in these art forms when we ban them. Huck Finn is great literature. There is a reason why Mark Twain chose to use the "N" word. Do you really expect Huch Finn to say, "person of color"? When I watched Amos n' Andy I liked seeing "my people" on the screen as opposed to all the white that was everywhere as if we didn't even exist. Song of the South has great animation and fun stories about Bro' (not br're) Rabbit. If they never show the movie again they could at least air the cartoon parts of it. I think we may be becoming oversensitive when it comes to these art forms. I watched a Bugs Bunny cartoon with a Black Elmer Fudd. That was banned but the White Elmer Fudd remains. Both characters were short, and not too bright. Bugs got the best of both of them. So, what's the difference? Just my thoughts. Typozfem |

| This hiding of past racism started with those High faulting Negros in the NAACP when they wanted Amos N Andy taken of television. They felt that Black people was being portrayed in a negative way. Most of my Black elders actually liked Amos N Andy. All of Stepin Fetchit's movies are hard to find. Matter of fact just the name "Stepin Fetchit" makes a Black person cringe.....But...this man Lincoln Perry aka Stepin Fetchit was portraying a character that was very popular back in the 20's, 30's, and 40's. I recommend reading The Life and Times Of Lincoln Perry. But those pompus Negros who had wanted to act white, and discriminated against their own people just like whites did back in the day.....such as those in the NAACP....not only destroyed this mans career.....they destroyed his life. Stepin Fetchit was the first millionaire Black actor, very flamboyant, and as far as talent goes he should be considered on par with Charlie Chaplin (a child molestor), W.C. Feilds, who was a drunk, and the rest of those white actors of his day. But no because he portrayed a coon character he is despised and hated in the Black community. If Black people can hate on Stepin Fetchit....why not hate on these coon rappers. I'm embarrassed when i see some of those minstrel rappers in their jigaboo costumes. They are portraying the same sterotype that ole Step did. |

Greetings Lincoln Perry actually lead an interesting life, I too recommend reading a bio on him. The first cartoon in this thread, the Coal Black one...I thought it was a cartoon someone recently made and put an aged look to it No, I don't think racism should be buried. There are too many of us that HAVE forgiven the enemy, and dont even know the full story on the atrocities that were done to us. Great thread comrade Militantgsg!!!

We must ask ourselves what kinds of things we want to know that was hidden and why we want to know it. Just because it was hidden means its to everybodies advantage to know. Why is an important question if we its just figureing out the past just for the sake of the past. One of the things that makes the third eye more focused is practicing thinking about unseen or hidden knowledge in my experience though.
