I'm sure a lot of you in here have had a racial discussion with a white person right? And you know how it usually goes... "Africans had slaves" "You weren't a slave" "My parents don't own slaves" "Get over it. It was a long time ago"... All that bull-s*** right? lol. Anyway, I'm talking to this uppity young devil at the library the other day and he loved to play the 13th Amendment card. "The 13th Amendment freed the slaves dude! Look it up!" So I did, and I must say that I've never seen a greater example of devilishment. Here's what it says:

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

From my point of view, this thing says that slavery is still ok in jail. If there was ever a reason as to why pigs and gov. treat us the way they do, I think this is it. They put you back in slavery everytime they put them handcuffs on you... Anyway, to my question. Anybody know of any big companies/corporations that exploit prison labor?

There are several items that are being produced in prison. Some of the items are clothing,shoes,furniture,aircraft parts,eyewear and circuit boards. These products i mentioned are produced for companies such as Chevron, IBM, Motorola, Compaq, Texas Instruments, Honeywell, Microsoft, Victoria's Secret and Boeing. I think Nike uses prisoners to make sneaker parts.

Companies that make benefits from prison labor are numerous & usually unknown to the public because they hide behind subcontractors, as a consequence an exhaustive list is hard to find but here are some : AT&T, Golden arches makes electronic menu boards for McDonalds, TWA, J.C. Penny, IBM, Toys R Us, Escod Industries, Dell Computers, 100% of all army helmets, ammunition cases, body armor, I.D. tags, shirts and pants, tarps and canteen covers exactly like Nazi used to do...!

"Clothing and Textiles," "Electronics," "Fleet Management," "Industrial Products," "Office Furniture," Recycling" and "Services" more than thirty different products; from law enforcement, military and industrial uniforms to the refurbishing of vehicles; from making draperies to providing fulfillment services (www.unicor.gov)


But don't we forget the private prison sector , where corporations such as Correctional Corporations of America (CCA) & Geo Group CIA affialated (previously known as Wackenhut Corrections Corp) are paid up to 60$ per day/per man to held our brothers & sisters captives. Prison privatization has the support of everyone from Bill Clinton to the Republican right. Some of the country's biggest corporations are investing in the business, including American Express and Goldman Sachs & Co, Merrill-Lynch, Shearson-Lehman or even Sodexho a large French food services and management services.

"Stock in CCA has quadrupled in the past four years. And these companies wield growing political clout: CCA, together with Wackenhut Corrections Corp., gave almost $150,000 in campaign contributions to Republicans and Democrats in 1995-96.
From 1995 to 1998 it was among the five top performing stocks on the NY Stock Exchange. Founded in 1983, the value of its stock rose from $50 million in 1986 (when it went public) to $53.5 BILLION IN 1997.
Its careful selection of the most lucrative prison contracts, its use of prison labor and its slashing of labor costs led the Wall Street firm of Paine-Webber to conclude, "Crime pays."

Thanks for this thorough post. This is the subtle information that many of our people never receive or seek out. Once you understand that life was not all peachy after slavery, that there were many, if not more obstacles and barriers presented to our strong ancestors, it is not difficult to see how slavery subtly morphed into something more psychologically dangerous. This seemingly comfortable situation Africans in america have found ourselves in is more dangerous psychologically because many of our brothers and sisters can see is that the physical chains are off of our bodies.

Yes the sarcastic tone is not needed in as much as we are all students of each other, even at my age I learn constantly! Simultaneously, the question is relevant, of course without the harsh tone. As a former Broadcast Journalist I uncovered some info on the Prison systems. It seems that these punks build prisons ahead of time after having done a sociological survey of various geographical area for "potential" prisoners! Yes they use an analysis provided by various sciences to determine how many folks they will incarcerate and then build accordingly! Now as for us the determinant question is, Are going to behave in a way that does not lead us to be their chattel slaves. Understanding they either want you in submission or dead, so in my opinion the only prisoners that should exist are political ones!

Unfortunately too many of us submit as opposed to resist. We proudly wear targets on our backs and await the beast to come and collect us. We participate in the game that they have set for us! Worst than that those of us who know remain in a box and refuse to teach those of us who don't, we rehash information amongst those who already have the information! This is a bit of mental incarceration as well. In my opinion unless we the enlightened use our light to enlighten others we are useless. We argue amongst ourselves as opposed to quietly going about the business of revolution, teaching the masses who need this info. These jackasses will never stop, but we can stop them!!!

I think, first off, we need a change of thinking. The knowledge we pick up from the neighborhood and family, school, and media is that wrong food that we're digesting. Knowledge of self and unity are the foundation. We also need that $. How can we build if we got no green? A lot of brothers/sistas get locked up for going the illegal route to eat. A lot of brothers/sistas also get locked up behind promiscuous women/men (some of us are TOO emotional these days). Gotta get a hold on that and get the mind right.

There's more to add on, but the last thing I'll mention is we need to "grow some balls" and start ridin. Pigs come in the hood and do whatever they want because they know we ain't gon' do nothin. But seeing as police were originally used after the "Emancipation Proclamation" to keep freed slaves afraid to revolt, we can get a gist as to why we don't wanna bang out with po-po's. I say we need to get over it and drop that Black Power Fist down on anybody that poses a threat.

HOW can we get these, amongst other things, to happen? I don't really know. I'm just bringing as many brothers into the fold as I can and living life according to what I know... Peace

Majadi, asante sana for these really excellent points! i think even those of us who have this information still believe somewhere deep in our subconscious that this shitstem ain't gonna touch us, not in any real way, so we use this for entertainment purposes only. We need to build a Pan-Afrikan Emergency Response Network. We need to respond to Action Alerts, for example. We need to be using this incredible wealth of revolutionary information to do workshops, print up pamphlets, do radio/tv shows, spread the word however we can to break chinks into our peoples' collective consciousness. We gotta be able to stream our propaganda as heavily as the enemies of our people stream theirs!
