These 2 stories ran concurrent this summer and received heavy media attention because of their similarities and differences.
Joe Horn, the white Texas man who shot and killed to blacks. He called 911 and reported thieves at his neighbor's house, and despite the repeated pleas by the dispatcher to not go outside and shoot anybody, he said he was going to shoot and kill both men. As you can hear, he said they were GETTING AWAY and both men received gunshot to their backs, but a grand jury cleared him of any wrong-doing and said he acted in self-defence.
John White, a black man from Long Island confronted what he described as a "lynch mob" of five white young men and boys he believed had come to his Miller Place home after his 19-year-old son, Aaron. White testified that the group spewed racial epithets and started coming up his driveway when Daniel Cicciaro lunged at him, causing the gun to fire once, accidentally, striking Cicciaro. Mr. White faces a maximum of 15 years in jail after being convicted of manslaughter in the second-degree. His sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 21. The father and husband was convicted on Dec. 22 in the accidental shooting death of Daniel Cicciaro. He remains free on $100,000 bail; and his defense team is preparing an appeal.
