PINELLAS PARK, Florida (CNN) -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson arrived Tuesday at Terri Schiavo's hospice and called on Florida lawmakers to have the brain-damaged woman's feeding tube reinserted.

"This is one of the profound moral, ethical issues of our time, the saving of Terri's life," the civil rights leader said. "And today we pray for a miracle."

Schiavo, 41, hasn't had water or nutrients since March 18 and is likely to die by week's end, doctors have said.

Jackson said he contacted Schiavo's husband and legal guardian, Michael Schiavo, to request a visit with her, but "he said he thought no."

Michael Schiavo had no immediate reaction to Jackson's comments.

Schiavo has said his wife would want the tube removed, and he has called on outsiders to stop trying to violate her wishes.

Jackson said he is "sensitive" to the struggles and pain that both Michael Schiavo and Terri Schiavo's parents and siblings, the Schindlers, are undergoing.

He said it is his belief that Terri Schiavo should be kept alive. "While law is important, law must be tempered with mercy to have justice," he said.

Jackson said he spoke with several state senators, pushing them to pass emergency legislation, and plans to contact more senators.

While he has sided with the Schindlers, Jackson said in a statement last week that he had "serious misgivings about the appropriateness of Congress intervening with the legal court process on a specific, individual matter."

That statement followed congressional legislation signed by President Bush that allowed federal courts to review state court decisions in the case. (Full story)

In his statement, Jackson added, "a consistent moral and ethical position would extend a feeding tube to all who are confronted with starvation -- to demand public, government policy to feed the hungry."

Jackson traveled to Florida at the invitation of Bobby Schindler, Terri Schiavo's brother.

While Jackson was speaking to reporters, an apparent protester slipped past police into the heavily guarded hospice before he was arrested by police.

Officers used a Taser stun-gun to apprehend the man, who police said was Dow Pursley, a family therapist.

Capt. Sanfield Forseth with the Pinellas Park Police Department said the man would be taken to Pinellas County Jail and charged with attempted burglary and resisting arrest without violence.

Autopsy requested
Michael Schiavo has asked that an autopsy be performed on his wife after her death so that a full report can be done on the extent of her brain damage, his attorney said Monday.

Attorney George Felos said the autopsy will be performed by Dr. Jon Thogmartin, the chief medical examiner of Pinellas County.

Terri Schiavo collapsed in 1990 from cardiac arrest and suffered brain damage because of lack of oxygen. She has been in the center of a decade-long legal tug-of-war between her husband and guardian, Michael, and her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler.

Michael Schiavo maintains his wife would not want to be kept alive in her condition, while her parents claim she could improve with intense therapy.

Schindler supporters in Florida and Washington appealed Monday to have Terri Schiavo's feeding tube reinserted.

Bob Schindler spoke to reporters Monday after visiting his daughter at her hospice in Pinellas Park. "She's failing, but she's still with us," he said. "She has to be saved.

"I plead again that the powers-that-be don't give up on her. We haven't given up on her and she hasn't given up on us."

Terri Schiavo's sister said she "is wide awake and very responsive."

"She recognizes me," Suzanne Vitadamo said Monday. "She's weaker but she's still trying to talk."

Felos said he visited with Terri Schiavo Monday and that she appeared "very calm."

"I saw no evidence of bodily discomfort whatsoever," he said.

He said her condition had changed little from his last visit on Saturday.

"Terri's eyes do look more sunken," Felos said. "And her breathing was a little on the rapid side."

He described her pulse as "thready," or slow.

Jesse's a sucka and a sellout all up into one. I don't criticize him often, but he's encroaching on the boundaries of their marriage.

He calls himself a reverend yet ignores the fundamental responsibility that a man has for his wife. Furthermore, he also fails to mention that Terry is unlikely in any pain since 70% of her brain is spinal fluid.

And to take it even further, when the body is severly dehydrated and malnurishished, it begins to secrete a type of endorphin (I can't remember the name) to ease the discomfort, creating a sense of euphoria. And on top of that, the doctors have been injecting her with Morphine, so she is not suffering.

Can you beleive the white devils at Fox News and elsewhere are praising him, when at any other time they spit more venom at him than a basket of Cobras.

You know I read this stoty earlier and I can't say I'm suprised at all with Jesse's actions. I couldn't help thinking when I read this quote above that He's so concerned with the saving of white life. I'm not a big follower of network news but correct me if I'm wrong was Jesse Jaskson out here fighting police in L.A. recently when that young boy was murdered by the police a few weeks ago when he backed into the police car. Or where was Jesse several Years ago when the police shot and killed a 70 plus year old homeless black woman several years for brandishing a screwdriver? What sense does that make. this case has people arguing, fighting, choosing sides. just the other day my wife and i almost got to arguing over this. lol

in any case, the man claims he wife said one thing. his parents claim their daughter would rather live in a vegetative state in a hospital for the rest of her life rather than die. (unlikely, but yeah i am not going to get sucked back into this arguement. lol)

in any case, i suggest that we all consider how we would like to be treated in such an instance. if you are 21 years of age or older, you may consider writing a "living will" if you are financially able to have a lawyer do it for you.

I posted some links to free business forms in the PC Tech Advice Forum. ALong with those forms are samples of living wills. You can also go to Office Depot and buy a pack and take it home read it, fill it out and then determine how it would accessed and distributed in case of your health failing you.

Remember, only in a european country we would take away a right of a husband to provide the last words and wishes of his spouse. Sometimes upon death we find people without wills losing all the assets acquired by the couple because no will existed and property was in only the deceased person's name. this is the white justice system, one completely devoid of common sense.

as for me, i have told my wife in no uncertain terms should i ever be allowed to live in a vegetative state beyond a month's time, unless she received a direct message from the ancestors or the Orisa through divination or the spirit possession of a traditional priest. it simply doesnt make any sense. are we so afraid of death that we would hoard resources that save the curable? why would anyone want force another person to lay up in a bed for years at time unable to do, speak, eat, talk, walk, think, etc.?

I know this subject is dead ( pardon the pun)But I'm still a lil pissed and I have one final comment: How could this jackass, go down there sand tap and foot shuffle for this starving woman, and not cry out for HIS people,(though I am pretty sure I will disown him by the end of this post) who have been MURDERED with pretty much the same tactic by the same people??? Starvation HAS killed millions and MILLIONS of our people and it is continuing to do so right at this very second. Greatest weapon ever created. Heartbreaking, isn't it?
