| The struggles of aboriginals The struggles of aboriginals
Seeing im from Australia I’ve been asked to write down my views on the issue.
Australia has had a long history of racism even before the immigration restriction act of 1901 (white Australia policy). About 8 generations ago whites started immigrating to Australia were they declared Australia was uninhabited (they have some special term for this can spell it though) and started moving in taking land of the aboriginal people unofficially it was a war. There’s a story form my local area of just what kind of abuses they, the aboriginals when through. During the 1800’s not sure when a women was having a affair with a white man coming home rather late she told every one she had been raped by a black man to hide the truth of what she had been doing. In reaction to the “rape” the towns people when out en mass and killed every black they could find. That’s a just one story I’ve been told about many times from different sources one of which is school.
During resent times though there has been the kidnapping of aboriginal kids (during the pre-50s or 60s) the idea was the assimilation of the blacks into white society. Even more recently, the tent embassy which is an aboriginal centre that lobbies the government for aboriginal rights.
Lands rights have been granted also for different communities around Australia so they can live in traditional way of life. The idea of reconciliation has been quite relevant in today’s society the idea of saying sorry for the crimes of past Australian generations. Though millions got out there and marched for aboriginal rights and the process of reconciliation our PM John Howard won’t say sorry.
This year we had the Redfern riots in Sydney, basically cops were chancing an aboriginal kid TJ (can’t spell his last name) and he fell of his bike onto a pike which went through him and killed him. This sparked a riot were aboriginal teenager’s pelted cops with rocks and such.
Personally my views are affirmative action is racism (help them not because there black but because there human) – aboriginals have been treated really badly – one demand is that aboriginals should be recognized has the original owners of the country by writing it in the constitution which I support – a support land rights for aboriginals – services should be extended into the bush areas because some aboriginal communities are like a 3rd world country which many voice there opposition too.
