| You Call This a Democracy! by PP Ojore Lutalo
(please forward to any lists or newspapers) YOU CALL THIS A DEMOCRACY! TRUE THOUGHTS PEOPLE TELL THEIR STORIES Ojore N. Lutalo P.O 861-59860 SBI#901548 Trenton, NJ 08625-0861 I was held incommunicado for six days in New Jersey's Trenton State Prison draconian and nightmarish mental health unit, called 1-C by prison workers and the boom-boom room by most prisoners. I was not allowed to shower, change my clothing, have soap, toothbrush, wash cloth or towel. I was not allowed to make telephone calls, send out or receive personal or legal mail. I was also not allowed to receive personal or legal visits or take part in any inside or outside recretional activities. Here's my Story: New Jersey State Prison Administrative Segregation Unit (AD-SEG) 7-Wing-7-Right-6-Ter-Cell #22. On Monday, September 12th, 2005, 6-tier was slated for afternoon yard. I approached 6-tier gate to be stripped searched and I was told by the security guard conducting the strip searches that I could not take in yard movement because I was on "NO CONTACT STATUS", which meant that I could not go to the yard or get visits with any other prisoner's in AD-SEG. I asked the security guard why i was on NO CONTACT STATUS and who gave the order for my placement on such a draconian police state status and he told me that he did not know the answers to my questions. I was not allowed to go to the yard or receive visits by myself either! I was only allowed out of the cell once a day for ten minutes to take a shower! I addressed this repressive situation by way of the attached administrative remedy form dated September 1th, 2005 and the person who responded said: "the writer will attempt to address this situation." My thoughts were things could not get any worse! Little did I know, the worse was yet to come...... Around 1:30am on Thursday, October 13th,2005, the following events transpired: LOCK UP LOCK DOWN The lock and lock down stated around 1:30 am, when a cell extraction team of several security guards, dressed in combat gear, woke me up and the extraction team sergeant called out my name and said: "per orders of the warden, you are to be moved to 1-C (the so-called mental health unit)," without telling me why! So I started thinking, why the boom-boom room?, since it is well known that I do not suffer from or with any psychological decompensations. I get up and I start to feel around in the darkness of the cell for my clothing to get dressed (I sleep naked) because they turned the power off for some reason. The sergeant told me to turn the cell light on. I tell him I can't because the power is off. He asks for a flashlight, but they don't have one among themselves. I finally get dressed for the unexpected, but I could not find any thermal underwear in the dark, which I regretted during my six day stay down in the boom-boom room. I moved to the front of the cell to have my hands cuffed behind my back through the bars. The sergeant told me to back out of the cell when the cell dooor opened and face the wall. As I am backing out of the cell, I looked down the tier to my right and I saw this agent from the prison's Special Investigation Division (SID) squad, recording the action. One of the extraction team members place his hand between by back cuffed hands and I'm escorted off the tier. ENTERING THE LIVING NIGHTMARE OF 1-C, THE BOOM-BOOM ROOM THAT NO LIVING PERSON SHOULD EVER BE SUBJECTED TO! As I enter 1-C, I see that 1-C have four or five cells located beind a floor to ceiling fence, with the first cell behind the fence, but with another built around the first cell. They put me in the first cell and ask me if I am going to comply with their orders once they remove the hand cuffs. I said yeah. They uncuffed my right hand and tell me to place my hand behind my head and they do the same with my left hand and then tell me to turn around and strip. i go through the strip search motions: raise my hands, open my mouth, stick my tongue out, lift my private parts, turn around, raise my right foot, then my left foot, bottoms up and then I spread the cheeks of my ass. Then they tell me to turn around and face the wall until they leave. They leave and I turn around to put my clothing on, only to find out the took my clothing with them! There I stand, ass out, butt naked, in a cold cell, standing next to a puddle of water! I look around the cell to do a survey of my repressive surrounds and I find the following: the cage is twenty feet tall, twenty feet long and fifteen feet wide, with two ceiling mounted observation cameras! It dawn on me that I am in a "close watch cell!" One camera is over the dirty, uncovered foam mattress on the floor, which is also dirty. The other camera is located over the cell door. The cell light is located, high up against the wall and the white burning light stays on twenty four hours a day, making sleeping difficult and your eyes start feeling like they have sand underneath your eyelids. Focusing becomes difficult after your eyes are exposed to the twenty four hour burning white light. Back to the cage. The cage has built into the wall stainless steel toilet and sink with the window in the cage (7 feet long and 6 iches wide) situated eigth feet high in the back of the cage. The vent in the cage is located high up against the wall and the vent blows out freezing cold air twenty four hours a day. The cage floor is painted gray, the bottom half of the walls are gray and the upper walls are painted white, with a window in the door (five feet long and six inches wide). The only bedding I am given is lying on top of the dirty uncovered mattress. I move towards that, bare footed, to check it out. What I find are two paper thin sheets, that are white, six feet long and twelve feet wide. I tear up a sheet to cover up the puddle of water on the floor, to keep my bare feet dry and wrap the other sheet around my body. I start pacing up and down the cage to generate some body heat because I start to feel the coldness of the cage assaulting my naked body. When I grow weary of pacing the cage, i sit atop the stainless steel sink hugging my body with paper sheet and thinking: " the way that I am now being treted is illegal." The coldness of the cage is setting in again because I can feel my body starting to shake like a pair of loaded dice in a crap game, so I get off the sink and start pacing the floor again. I entered the woes of the boom-boom room at 1:30 am and at 9:30 am they gave me back my clothing! The telephone is ringing off the hook. Calls are coming in from other prison security guards wanting to know if Lutalo has bugged out, went crazy. I grow weary of pacing the floor and sitting atop the sink, so around 9:30 pm on the 13th, i cover up the dirty foam mattress with a paper sheet and lay down fully dressed and doze off. Shortly after, I wake up to the sound of splashing water, to see water leaking from the ceiling and running down the wall, seeping under the mattress. I jump up and tear up the other paper sheet to soak up the water. I call the guard, who is watching me on the camera from his desk. He opens the gate and comes to the cage door. I point to the problem and ask him for some more paper sheets. He tells me they don't have any more. I ask him, could he move me to another cage? He tells me he has to check with the sergeant. Now the water is running underneath the cage door. The sergeant came and saw the problem and two hours later, they move me into cage #2, without the twenty four hour camera watch. Cage #2 has another dirty foam mattress with two paper sheets atop it. Cage #2 is just as cold as cage #1, so I start pacing the floor to generate some body heat. Just like I was illegally place in 1-C, the boom-boom room, it was illegal for the warden to have placed me in a cage that was condemned! I stay in cage #2 until Saturday afternoon of October 15th. That afternoon a sergeant came to the cage and told me I was being moved to 1-C overflow. I would at last have a bed to sleep in. I rolled up my paper sheets, got handcuffed and was escoted to 1-C overflow. 1-C overflow is the left side of 1-C. They put me in cage #1 on 1-C overflow. I entered the cage to find a steel bed frame bolted to the wall and floor, with a dirty foam mattress on it and a working light switch. The cage also had two wall mounted close watch cameras in it and the cage was just as cold as the other cages in the main section of the boom-boom rooms, 1-C. I was given two security toothbrushes,a small tube of toothpaste, a bar of soap and one dirty cotton spread, so thin you could see through it. I was also given four paper wash cloths. They would not give me any paper sheets or a clean blanket. I was not allowed to shower or given a clean change of clothing. I stayed in 1-C overflow until 8:30 am Tuesday morning, October 18th. Tuesday morning of the 18th at 12:40 am, five guards came into the cage with a nurse. The sergeant told me that the nurse wanted to take my vitals. I thought this was a strange request since I had not requested any medical assistance and it was 12:40 am with five guards standing there and I was so ioslated, so I consented. The nurse only took my blood pressure and left the cage without taking my temperature, pulse or heart rate or asking any questions about my medical history, which I thought were all part of taking one's vitals. THE SEQUEL Around 8:30am on Tuesday October 18th, 2005, three security guards show up at the cage door in 1-C overflow. The sergeant told me that I am being moved to the Management Control Unit (MCU). I get my few items together and I am handcuffed and escorted to the MCU. I enter MCU on the right side, 4B-Right and cell #6 opens up. The handcuffs are removed and I step into the cage to discover that the cage is another "close watch" one, with another dirty foam mattress on the floor and a close watch camera mounted in the ceiling by the door. The stool and cage shelves were removed, the light switch has a steel plate over it and the wall sockets have steel plates over them. The cage light stays on twenty four hours a day. The floor, the toilet and the sink are filthy! I request cleaning equipment and a telephone call and both requests are negated by the guards in the control booth. I use toilet paper to clean the floor and the sink as best I can! I do not endeavor to clean the inside of the toilet because it it so dirty! This MCU close watch cage is smaller than the close watch cages down in the boom-boom rooms, 1-C, so my eyes are hurting more from the glare of the twenty four hour bright white lights! You call this a democracy? Today is Thursday October 20th, 2005 and I still do not know why I was placed on no contact status on September 12th, 2005 or why I was placed in the boom-boom room, 1-C on Thursday October 13th, 2005 or why I was re-interned in the Management Control Unit on Tuesday October 18th, 2005. You call this a democracy? Per orders of the warden, I was placed on no contact status, per orders the warden, I was illegally interned in the prison's so called mental health unit, per orders of the warden, I was interned in the Management Control Unit. All of this without ever "BREAKING A SINGLE RULE!" You call this a democracy? If they came for me this way on the inside, they can come for you the same way on the outside. All in the name of democracy! Do you still call this a democracy? I need outside legal help to get a transfer to a prison out of state... | Some info. on him
Remember, we’re still here “Here we remain, yesterday’s urban guerillas, abandoned in captivity” -Ojore Nuru Lutalo Recently released from a Management Control Unit (MCU) after spending years in solitary confinement, OJORE NURU LUTALO is still incarcerated in Trenton, New Jersey, for actions carried out in the fight for Black Liberation. In Ojore's own words, he is "serving a parole violation sentence (we received 14 to 17 years) stemming from a 1977 conviction for expropriating monies from a capitalist state band (in order to finance our activities) and engaging the political police in a gun battle in December 1975 in order to effect our departure from the bank, and to ensure success of the military operation… "After my parole violation term terminated in December 1987, I started serving a forty year sentence with a twenty year parole ineligibility (I was paroled in 1980, and I have been back in captivity since April 20, 1982) that I have received in 1982 for having a gun-fight with a drug dealer. The overall strategy of assaulting a drug dealer is to secure monies to finance one's activities, and to rid oppressed communities of drug dealers." Ojore was originally arrested with New Afrikan POW Kojo Bomani Sababu, and was struggling with comrade Andaliwa Clark up until the point that Andaliwa was killed in action within the confined of New Jersey's infamous Trenton State Prison after he shot two prison security guards in the repressive Management Control Unit on January 19, 1986 when they tried to stop him from escaping from captivity. Ojore was a comrade of the late Kuwasi Balagoon, a New Afrikan anarchist POW. “I’ve been involved in the struggle, the war against the fascist state since 1970. I’ve been an anarchist since 1975 without any regrets. Prior to my involvement in the struggle, I was just another apolitical lumpen (bandit) here in Amerika.” “I was… influenced and highly motivated by the Black Liberation Army (BLA) here in Amerika. These sisters and brothers were New Afrikans just like me from the streets of the ghettos who took the initiative militarily, to start assassinating members of the state’s security forces who were murdering black people in our communities. From the inception of all revolutions, I feel that the people need armed combat units to check state sponsored acts of terrorism by the government’s security forces. In addition, I feel that these armed combat units are necessary to show the people that fascist acts of state-sponsored terrorism… will be responded to militarily. In 1975 I became disillusioned with Marxism and became an anarchist (thanks to Kuwasi Balagoon) due to the inactiveness and ineffectiveness of Marxism in our communities along with repressive bureaucracy that comes with Marxism. People aren’t going to commit themselves to a life and death struggle just because of grand ideas someone might have floating around in their heads. I feel people will commit themselves to a struggle if they can see progress being made similar to the progress of anarchist collectives in Spain during the era of the fascist Bahamonde…” Until recently, Ojore was locked down in an MCU in Trenton. “I’m encased in a cage of steel and concrete surrounded by high prison walls topped with gun towers and rows of razor wire while being watched by sadistic fascist pigs. Nevertheless, I’m not complaining because I have accepted the revolution, which is an armed struggle for me, and I have come to terms with the prospects of death and captivity… The vast majority of the Prisoners of War and Political Prisoners now being interned here in the concentration camps of North Amerika aren’t receiving any assistance (e.g. being liberated, assistance in liberating ourselves, financial assistance needed to obtain food packages, winter clothing, reading material and postage stamps) from the so-called progressive revolutionary organizations, groups and individuals here in Amerika. With our talents, we have been abandoned here the in the state’s numerous concentration camps and our MCUs by those out there in what we call minimum custody… We don’t need moral support because we have purpose. We don’t need anyone to tell us to stay strong because we are going to remain steadfast anyway, because we have come to terms with the prospects of death and captivity.” The Anarchist Black Cross Federation (ABCF) encourages everyone to be in contact with Ojore for more information. Be considerate and include a postal money order made out to Ojore Lutalo with his state number (59860) on it to cover his mailing costs. Or you can contact the ABCF for information on what we do to support Ojore and the Anarchist Subsistence Program which sends funds and other materials to anarchist PP/POWs (like Ojore), or the non-partisan Warchest Program.
