      Laptop Troubles

Over the past 3 or 4 days, my laptop has "mysteriously" shut down on me out of the blue. Early this morning, I received a message that my laptop shut down by itself to protect my files. The message also said that there had been a change in my computer's configuration, which is why the computer shut down. Is there anything that I can do myself to find out what is wrong with my laptop? I don't want to take it to a computer specialist unless I absolutely have to.

Some people take themselves WAY TOO SERIOUSLY, when in actuality, no one else is really taking them as seriously as they think.

If you're using WIN XP and have the System Restore Service activated, you can use System Restore to go back to a previous resotre pont before you had the problem. You may also use SYstem Restore to see what changed may have been made to your configuration on or just before the problem started.

You can access the System Restore Wizard through the Start menu. To access the System Restore Wizard, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.

Also, check for viruses, etc. One thing that you may want to do in any case is vacuum your fan. Laptops are notorious for collecting dust around the fan. The compactness of components in laptops makes them prone to overheating and the motherboard being heat-damages. Do this regardless.

If you have a WIndows Cd that matches your version, you can run the Windows repair feature from the CD. It will repair any corrupted installation files, supposedly without overwritng your system or software install files.

It you've been running on this install for a while (6 mos. to a year), it may just be time to re-install WIndows altogether. This is a known hassle with windows. File creep causes many system slow-downs and eventualy operating errors.

I use an Open Source program on my laptop called CCleaner, check it out here: http://www.ccleaner.com/

Good luck! I feel for you, Windows is a &#&*. I'm on my way to Linux, and I learn some new skills to boot.
