My dvd/cd writer recently decided that It didn't want to work anymore.

I'm not exactly sure what happened. Is it possible for those things to burn out? The drive still reads disc/dvds but it just refuses to burn anything.

      someone help me...

Get a lens cleaner and see if that works. If that doesn't help out then you should have someone install a new disc drive for you.

I'm not sure why I would need a lens cleaner if it already reads disc. :/

I find it weird that my system acknowledges every disc except CD-Rs all of a sudden. When I go to burn something I get a "there is no disc in your drive" message.

The CD drive could be defective. It would not neccessarily show up as 'bad' in the device manager. This one is a hard thing to 'prove' without just replacing the drive, so I would not do that until all other options have been exhausted.

My cd drive/dvd drive are one in the same.
I'm kind of confused right now because I am currently burning a data disc to DVD.

I couldn't do this with a CD just a few minutes ago...and I'm sure I won't be able to after this burning is done.

This is giving me a headache.... why the heck won't this shit acknowledge CD-RS?

You Rang ... When it comes to CD\DVD drives headaches are part of the equation, but it doesn't have to be that way. Make sure all your drivers for your hardware is updated as well as your operating system XP, Vista etc.

It may take a bit of troubleshooting but be patient and we might just find the solution, unless it is the physical drive itself which may be defective. Most of the time it is a software issue so lets begin.

Okay first let's try these options by microsoft. Just Walk Wit Me through this process Ok

      Greetings Walk With Me!

      How old is your computer?

The problem could be caused by a faulty drive, but the cause is more likely to be outdated firmware installed in the drive.

During their manufacture DVD writers are programmed with a firmware database that contains the names of supported brands of disc. Firmware is software code that is permanently stored on a EEPROM flash-memory chip. CD/DVD drive manufacturers often update the firmware in order to fix compatibility issues of this kind.

It isn't uncommon for DVD writers to fail to write to some brands of disc at the full rated speed. The drive's firmware has to be able to recognise the make of disc. That means that some brands of disc probably are not included in the drive's compatible media list that is in its firmware, so, updating it might fix the problem.

There is firmware update available. Installing it is supposed to improve writing performance. Note well that you must read the instructions carefully before you install the update. Firmware is region-specific, so only use the download for your country..(i.e. use United States, not the Japan version...lol.

Even with the latest firmware installed, some brands of disc just aren't compatible with some brands of drive. Either buy only the most expensive, top-quality brands that tend to be the most compatible, or find out by trial and error if a brand is compatible. Note that in its extensive testing of CD/DVD drives, Tom's Hardware Guide (read this article in particular about DVD's.. it's long but worth the read) http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/04/...h_the_trouble/ has discovered that discs made by Verbatim are the most compatible with most brands of drive.

Note that Datawrite (and some other brands) don't make their own discs. The company uses its name on discs made by several manufacturers. That is why some of its discs work at full speed with the drive and others don't. If you don't want to be disappointed, it's best to buy discs made by companies that manufacture their own discs, such as Verbatim.

DVDINF Pro - is a free utility that provides all the details you might want to know about an installed DVD drive, including the driver and version of firmware being used - http://www.dvdinfopro.com/.

The Firmware Page - Update Your CD/DVD Drive Firmware. Most users know that they can update their BIOS http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/BIOS.htm but not many know that they can also update the firmware of (most) CD and DVD drives. This site has full details plus some handy tips for overcoming the region locking on your DVD drive. - http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

I doing a time sensitive project, so please bare with my slow response time. Again I will try to check in a bit more frequent. Just continue to post in this thread and I will do my best to respond quickly.

      Peace!

Have you tried using different types of burnable CD's (CD-RW or different brand all together)

Good suggestion! I suggested that to Walk Wit Me as well but I have not received any feedback lately!

We just have to wait and see if he responds.

Well I think he’s got a good lead from you all… You know a lot of people don’t know how jacked up the compliance issue was in the beginning of the whole writable disc revolution. To read the list of what brand and model accepts what, is like reading a map to mars…lol I think he needs to remember what brand he used all the time and then go back to that brand of CD-Rs and stick with them! Forget about the discounts and the sales..lol for even a speed change on some newer disc (4x, 8x, 16x and so on) can throw some CD Burners off...

Also, if he need to change out his burner, I would just get an reasonable priced external CD burner (USB 2) and keep what he has already for DVD’s…

BTW_you can go online, if Sister Jahness hasn't given that link already, and find your model and compare your burners to what CD-R's it complies with...

      Remember... there is no spoon...
