Completely Removing Norton From A Machine

I recently had to deal with a customerís machine who had a Norton product installed on it which simply would not allow us to install a piece of software. After much troubleshooting and unsuccessfully trying to disable the Norton protection, we simply decided to uninstall it in order to get the installation done.

Unfortunately, going to Add/Remove programs in Windows didnít do the trick, so after some quick searching I found the Norton Removal Tool http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039. After downloading and running this, Norton seemingly was removed from the system and allowed us to install the software.

I do find it very ironic that this tool is distributed in the exact same manner as their malware removal tools.

I've got a problem with my security software again...

I had taken my laptop in to the shop to have a virus removed and to have them check the battery. They removed the virus, but the anti-virus program that I was using before, which was some kind of Symantec AntiVirus, I don't remember which one it was exactly, didn't work anymore. The program ran when I started it, but nothing happened when I tried to run an update. So I tried to uninstall it, but the program didn't show up on the list. I tried to manually remove the program and delete any trailing files. Most of them were deleted, but there are some ".dll" files that won't let me delete them at all. I keep getting a mesage saying that I don't have permission to delete the files, but I'm working with the administrator's account. How can I get these files off now?

Log in to safe mode as the admin and you'll be able to delete them then. Then you want to get another free anti-virus program like AVG or Avira AntiVir.
