      Is low price good enough?

Three U.S. cities try out $40 tablets in schools

Three U.S. cities try out $40 tablets in schools

It costs more than $40 to repair an iPad. So if 10 low spec Android tablets can be purchased for the price of one iPad then the issue becomes how much good can they do.

Another factor is that the Akaash tablets have a microSD slot. The iPad does not. Content can be delivered to the students on the card and they can save their work onto the card. It can than be moved to any other device with a microSD slot. The student is not tied to a particular device. That could be very important in case of malfunction.

The devices are so cheap a school can have lots of spares.

      Here is the iPad problem:

      School regrets iPad switch

School regrets iPad switch - We should not have bought the hype

It is not the devices, it is the content. Mostly more expensive means higher resolution, more CPU power, cameras, GPS and other bells and whistles. The Akaash has low CPU power and resolution, but how much do grade school kids really need? Are the expensive devices just a waste of money in relation to education.

Looks like another significant performance to price step.

My Google Nexus 7 died two weeks ago. Thias the second problem in 14 months but now it is out of warranty.

Been looking at broken tablets on eBay to possibly make one good tablet from two bad ones. That might work but I would still have a tablet with no microSD slot or rear camer

But Nvidia has announced the Note 7 inch tablet. It has a stylus and a new Tegra FOUR processor instead of a Tegra in the Nexus. So it may make more sense to spend $200 for the upgrade than $70 for a fix to get the same performance. They say it can do slow motion video at around 00 frames per second.

I think trying to make these devices so thin and light contributes to unreliability, possibly more than low price.

Tablets Compared: Why You Shouldn’t Spend Money on Cheap Chinese Android Imports

Depending on the manufacturer, Chinese-designed and manufactured tablets vary wildly in quality. Some manufacturers, such as Pipo and Ramos, maintain higher standards for both build quality and performance. Others, such as Ainol and off-brand manufacturers, while popular, do not possess a reputation for reliability or quality.

However, the hardware isn’t the primary failing of most Chinese tablets – it’s the firmware and software that fall short.
