The legacy of Biafra...untold story

The legacy of Biafra...untold story

What caused the war?

Biafra was a secessionist Igbo majority country in what is now Southeastern Nigeria from 1967-1970. After Nigeria received its "independence" in 1960, the British government left their Muslim Northern puppets in charge. Ethno-political strife occurred for six years mainly between the Western region (Yoruba dominated), Northern region (Hausa-Fulani dominated), and Eastern region (Igbo dominated), and other 200 ETHNIC GROUPS in between. This caused a bloody 1966 coup by mainly (but not only) junior Igbo officers against the mainly Northern military and political officers. What was the result? The massacres of thousands of innocent Igbos ALLOVER THE COUNTRY throughout 1966 until the Eastern region returned escaping Igbos and declared the republic of Biafra in 1967. This led to one of Africa's bloodiest wars.

Legacy

Millions of Igbo people died (mainly from starvation) as genocide was used as a tool to win the war by the Nigerian, Russian, Egyptian, British, US, and etc governments. The modern weapons, numbers, blockade, and etc gave Nigeria and European governments all the advantages against the very ill equipped and unprepared young Biafran nation in the all out war. The war should have ended within 10 days but it took 3 years to defeat the young nation which received little help from European and red cross relief agencies, South Africa, Rhodesia, and France. The gallant Igbo people bravely fought the first war against neocolonialism in Africa. As a result, Igbo people are in very bad shape and are allover the world. However, the movement for Biafra is still alive and growing as well as the Niger Delta movement and Oduduwa's peoples Congress against the Western recognized Muslim Northern oligarchy.

this didn't only bring political struggle for the Igbo, but psychological and spiritual struggle as the Pan Igbo identity and leadership nearly shattered as well as their relations within themselves and their neighbors who committed most of the atrocities during the war and partly beforehand (especially Midwesterners, Niger Deltans, Tiv, and Yorubas...it is funny to note their continual loyalty to Nigeria and fear of the Igbo yet the Tiv genocide, Yoruba oppression, and Niger Delta oil crisis is recently and done by their same rich fellow Muslim Northern brothers they joined against their Igbo brothers...karma is a bitch)...Igbo people are barely mentioned and are mis educated on in Nigeria and abroad. Even in Afro centered African studies the Igbo people are not well mentioned compared to the Yoruba, Hausa, and Benin empires. Not enough Igbo people are fluent in their language, culture, and history compared to the others. As Igbo people are recovering from the war, you can also say they are falling. But now the Pan Igbo identity and studies is resurrecting at home and in diaspora through organizations such as Igbo kwenu online magazine, Chiism, Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, and etc...
