| Sierra Leone Citizenship based on DNA...
Elder Cde. Roy (and everybody else), What's your opinion of the fact actor Isiah Washington got full Sierra Leone citizenship solely based on DNA testing which links his family back to Sierra Leone? Do you think this can be a method for Africans in the Americas to get to Africa?

Could this be another of the many ways that Whitey conspires to devide us up? My ancestors are from Africa period. If we could get Denzel, Oprah, Magic Johnson, and Will Smith to empty their savings and combine then, then we could build OUR OWN small democracy, republic, or whatever right in Africa. Combining resources is key. |

On one hand, this makes sense because, (to make a sweeping generalization) most relationships and interactions in Africa (historically speaking) are based on ideas of kinship. In that way, it makes sense that your citizenship should be in a place where you have the strongest kinship ties. On the other hand, ideas of kinship are so much more complicated than simple genetics. That being said, I am not opposed to this. Because although kinship is based on more than blood, we have to realize that as children of the diaspora, reestablishing ties based on other factors is going to be more complicated than simply identifying with "Africa" because most Afrikans on The Continent, don't see themselves as just "Africans". There are tribal identifications and other factors that factor into how an individual identifies his or herself. In recognizing that, I don't see the issue with using genetic markers to identify where our strongest kinship ties are. I believe that it would be easier to unite Africa if we all were able to join our "rightful" kinship groups and work within their social and cultural frameworks instead of doing it from the outside.

Take my youth, my labors, my love, my all and do thou when I shall have died for thee, take me to thy bosom, an untamed, untamable African." -Hubert Harrison |

This is some crazy idea. We don't need DNA for that. Moreover it's not practical at all. Let's take an Afrikan brother or sister from the US who want to find his original kins in Senegal. How many Senegalese should be tested with their DNA to find to whom the bruh or sis' belong to? Let's go even further, let's say the brother/sister find that his/her DNA has Bambara or even Fulani characteristics. Which Afrikan country will he/she choose to compare his/her DNA with? Fulani/Pulaar have spread in very large territories now known as countries such as Mali, Guinée, Sénégal, Gambia, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Mauritania, Burkina Faso etc. The same pattern of geographic distribution can be applied to the Bantu. Will the brother/sister compare his DNA with all these countries? Afrikan frontiers are as fictional as the DNA idea. Not to mention that the country that will grant you citizenship did not even exist when our ancestors have been kidnapped. Whole Afrika is our home. Let's take the problem the other way round. If an Afrikan family living in Afrika and they know that long time ago one member of their family, an ancestor has been enslaved in the other side of the Antlantic and they want to find his offsprings, what are they suppose to do? Is this family going to compare their DNA with all North/South Black Americans & the Carribeans Islands included? We have to be concrete & realistic. Many of us will never know where they precisely come from, many of us will never know who are the descendants of their abducted kins. As I'm writting right now somebody reading me from the forum in the US can be related to my family tree & lineage without neither of us knowing it. Therefore we all are potentially brothers & sisters, let's this beautiful potentiality be possible. We are an extended family. Afrikans in America or in the Carribeans need will power, organizations, nerves, force, preparations, ideology, links with other Afrikans, love, strategies & money to go back to Afrika not DNA. Consequently I emphatically say nooo & strongly oppose to this! DNA is not something to mess with.

Brother Sourakhata... you echo my exact thoughts DNA used exclusively will destroy the oneness of the Afrikan family. DNA would further divide us than unite us, not to mention the time process and frustrations that could concur. I see people putting their lives on hold in their temporary homes as they await their result(s). I see tribal warfare developing if this method was exclusively used to 'place' the people. It could possibly be more damaging than the drawn out borders that are in place today A better method would to read up on Afrika and the people, and get in where you fit in |
