Peace and Blessings,
Alot of people dont know about the extensive historic Black cilivization in Canada(which there is alot, chatham, windsor, st catherines Ontario and so on)
but one that stood out for me is AFRICVILLE Nova Scotia, which the history of black cilivilization goes back to the late 1600's. We all know about the underground railroad right? well, Nova scotia CANADA is where it ended. Here in Canada we have this notion that slavery never happened here, land of equal oppertunity etc... but all this is false, the first anti-slavery law under the British Empire in Canada dates to about 1746, which was that, anyone born into slavery can be freed after the age of 25.
Nova Scotia to me is like the mississippi, alabama of canada.
The story of Africville(Halifax, Nova Scotia) is one of the life and death of a community. The city of Halifax claimed that the Africvillians were re-located for humanitarian reasons. In fact, the decision was made on purely racist and economic grounds, as well as being driven by class privilege, with absolutely no consideration for the consequences such a move would have on the residents. The city of Halifax decided to expropriate the land to make way for industrial development but claimed they were only trying to end the segregation and discrimination that they felt Africville was causing. The abolition of Africville was based on ignorance for human rights and disregard for the residents based on the biased ideas of Africville being a slum.
Today, the location of Africville is now called Sea View Park.
below is a link to a documentary that outlines the history of Africville, struggle for reperations, and more!
