A West Philadelphia shootout just after midnight left two men wounded and another arrested.
A male, 17, was shot in the face and taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where his condition improved from critical to stable, police said.
Another male, 23, who suffered superficial wounds to the back and leg, was taken into custody after being treated at Mercy Hospital of Philadelphia.
A third male, found hiding under a truck near a gun stashed in a wheel wheel, was arrested and charged with weapons violations. The two wounded men apparently shot each other, said Sgt. Ronald Eldridge of Southwest Detectives.
Two plainclothes detectives happened upon the shooting while trailing some drug suspects, Edridge said.
A man pointed a gun at the officers, who resembled guys from the neighborhood, and one officer discharged his weapon once, but that that shot is not believed to have struck anyone, Eldridge said.
Officers in street clothes coming up on a scene like that is "the worst thing," but luckily no officers got shot, he said. Police are seeking other people who took part in the shootout, including a man who fled down an alley where another gun was found.
Five guns were recovered in all.
At 7:30 this morning, police were still on the scene, looking for more catridges, guns and other evidence.
