| SNCC & Black Resistance
Greetings of Afreekan Love Family, I am Joanie, a Re~covering Afreekan ameriakkkan and Re~presentative from the Voices in the Margins. Any body ever heard of this dude? Think his message is pertinent to todays issues? I'm curious why he is in Hungrary continuing his fight....for whom is he fighting. I'm inclined to go just to learn more about this.....If he an Afreekan that is. Somebody holla Black and let me know more bout this cat! Don't miss this great opportunity to hear long-time activist Michael Simmons speak while he's in Philly! "SNCC & Black Resistance to the Vietnam War" MICHAEL SIMMONS will talk about his experiences organizing with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and his individual and collective experiences of Black resistance to the Vietnam War and US imperialism during the Civil Rights Movement. SNCC was one of the first civil rights organizations to issue a public statement against the Vietnam War and openly critique US imperialism at home and abroad. Mr. Simmons will also share his experience of draft resistance during the Vietnam War, which ultimately led to his incarceration. This is a real opportunity to learn more about the Civil Rights Movement and Black Resistance to the Vietnam War and US Imperialism from someone who was actively involved in the interrelated struggles. And now that Mr. Simmons currently lives in Hungary--where he continues to do human rights work--this is a rare opportunity to hear Mr. Simmons speak in Philly before he returns to Europe. *When: Tuesday, August 9 *Time: 6:30-8:30pm Where: Friends Center of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) 1515 Cherry Street, Philadelphia (MLK Room) Sponsors: The Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors, Youth and Militarism Program of AFSC, and Third World Coalition of AFSC For more info, contact: Tamara K. Nopper at tnopper@yahoo.com ******************************* *To read SNCC's statement against the Vietnam War, originally issued in January of 1966, go to: http://www.aavw.org/protest/carmicha...bstract12.html **To learn more about Michael Simmons' current organizing work in Hungary, go to: http://raday.blogs.com/salon/michael/index.html ***To learn more about the sponsors, go to: Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors: www.objector.org Youth and Militarism of AFSC: http://www.afsc.org/youthmil/default.htm Third World Coalition of AFSC: http://www.afsc.org/locations/thirdworld.htm Akpe for allowing me to share |
