Respect Me...

Respect Me...

Respect me because
You turned my heart to stone
And u turned me against my man
And you crushed every dream of living
That we might of had
Because I struggle to be in control
Every time he might say no and because i
can’t respect the fact that he’s just trying to be a man
after you took his pride away.
And after you whipped his black body while
His babies watched and because I told them
That they don’t want to end up like that.
Respect me because I fed your blue eyed
Babies the milk from my breasts
While their mothers watched because
They couldn’t produce it like I had
Because every time they spilled a tear they ran
looking for me and forgot about u.
Respect me because your man secretly wishes
He still had a chance to touch my black body
Because he raped me and he beat me
And because my babies came out mulatto
Instead of black.
Respect me because I am the strange fruit
That hung from those southern branches that
Billie holiday sang about
Because it is my blood that fills many seas
Because I jumped off the slave ship before you could push me
and because my bones are still buried six feet deep
in a city that I don’t know the name of.
Respect me because you cut my baby from my womb and
then hung me from a tree and held him up for everyone to see
and because your children watched and smiled
while you did this to me.
Respect me because slavery equates to salary
And because I been working this 9-5 and I’ve never been paid
Because there are black babies in Africa dying of AIDS
EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!
Because my life was taken from me before I had the chance to
Become more than what I now seem to be.
Respect me because not a damn things changed
Because things are still the same
Because if it wasn’t for this poem you wouldn’t even know my name.
