Norfolk Police Shoot Suspect in Virginia Beach
A police pursuit that began in Norfolk early Friday morning ended in Virginia Beach with an exchange of gunfire between police and the suspect.
The Norfolk police officer involved was not hurt. The suspect was hit in the stomach and was transported to the hospital. The suspect is out of surgery, and listed in critical condition.
He has been identified as 24-year-old Jamerian Devonta Myles of Virginia Beach. Myles is charged with attempted campital murder of a law enforcement officer, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The incident began around 1:20am at the intersection of Northampton Boulevard and Military Highway in Norfolk when the suspect allegedly refused to pull over for a traffic stop.
A pursuit ensued, which officials say reached high speeds, and ended in Virginia Beach at the intersection of Diamond Springs and Shell Roads when the suspect vehicle crashed into a fence at U.S. Food Services.
According to Rene Ball, spokesperson for the Virginia Beach Police Department, after the crash the suspect fled from the car, but at some point turned around and fired several shots at the Norfolk police officer. The officer returned fire, hitting the suspect.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the incident.
WAVY News 10 has learned the officer had been with the Norfolk Police Department for about one year.
