I feel u; I used to say the same thing to folk I'd be teaching a few things in arabic.... then someone drop'd under my belt that if its a child, then yes a language other than one born into is easier to absorb; but with adults its different for they will always think in the language raise in; unless they're extraordinary folk. Example my oldest son lived in Senegal at age 11, etc and now 28 is still fluent in Woloof. He and his partna from here use both Woloof, some arabic and English interchangeably. But me? I have to "think" definition, syntax, etc. So I began to teach both, while reminding them that what was taught can be taught and learned in both languages... and some folk English had to be maintained for our intent was to teach to the best of our ability, in any language the student is ready to learn in. While all the time recognizing drawbacks in English. But I agree, there's the best then there's the rest. Now I have sista friend who gets pissed off b n addressed in anything but the ancient Metu netcher... puts me outta the loop. I told her so. Now we communicate in the medium known to both of us, without shame and recognizing that many Afrikan languages derive from earlier Afrakans... Yebehyia my brutha

one other example: in Dr. York's earlier days when he was known as Imam Isa had the children taught only Arabic; those youngsters were geting it, both colloquial and qur'anic. But no English. Problem: some parents knew only English. So? Children and parents could not communicate in speech or written forms! We'd tell'em - i.e. the ones who'd lissen - that was extreme and counterproductive. They, the bosses refused to lissen for who were we to tell them anything!?! So when I became the wali - guardian - of one of Imam 'Isa's countless neices, poor thing cried many a times: still couldn't speak with her two sons... they later learned english to add another language which is a blessing today; especially ina city like New York. I always admire the many Continental Afrikans I meet who speak so many different languages and dialects. Just a thought, for we're taught or lets say I was taught to teach only ina language the people understand. Those who learn to read the arabic, usually also wanna learn to speak it. I never did and so I'm deficient in it. (I sought to translate and interprete to fit our mentality. Wasn't tryna create Arab nothing; tho some of it had to rub off). Both must be learned; and to speak it one has to be in the cultural surroundings. (I remember Jomo Kenyatta addressing this same thing re the European who learned Gikuyu langauges. Just didn't seem to really understand it). Otherwise its strictly for academic use. And for some its for show. In my opinion, those of us born, reared and educated here will never understand any Afrikan language like those who live it from the cradle to the grave and beyond. We I think must do the best we can with what we have to do what must be done. There's no doubt in my mind that a time will come when, we born here, will be fully emersed in our Mother tongues; now's not that time. In my opinion. Meanwhile some of us will continue to help our Continental relatives learn this bastard english... simply bcause this is an englishman's land. Now with the Native folk, who still retain knowledges in their mama's languages, they're blessed. We'll get there....
