Ancestor Worship

Ancestor Worship

from the metur neter, ancestor worship isa practised that have taken place in the mohenjo daro, the indus valley, bennin and some other areas,it connects with the ancestors ( deceased) and give us great insight, this is so true due to my trial and tribulations as an afrikan man from brazil,i have been initated in the afrikan spiritual traditions, it is the connection betwen the physical the metaphysical, between the spirit world, our ancestors are the ones that always gave us guidance and direction, that is, our direct lineage and those that have ina great deal inspired us.
also in native amerikan and kanadian culture, they praise what is called the great spirits and the spirit of the forests, same practise is done among the yanomami of brazil, humbly yours
omowale aka the child that has returned home.

We shouldn't think of it as worship, but reverence for the ancestors. Many cultures, especially the Ife, believe that you don't know yourself unless you know your family at least 7 generations behind you. You are a comglomerate of the genes within your leneage. Your bones hold the secrets and the tales of the people who came before you. You could be an incarnate of your great, great, great grandfather or mother. So it is best that you know who they are and what they/you did, so you can call on that energy in your time of need.

This is why knowing your ancestors are important and goes beyond simple "praise." It is the calling of energy that is essential you that will revitalize you in a time of need. Your ancestors hold the key to your existence, so getting to know your ancestors helps to figure out who you are and what your purpose is. You are here to overcome a challenge that you didn't master in your past life. That's another reason for knowing the ancestors and what they have done. Because that ancestor could be in fact you and your purpose is better known by knowing their strengths and weaknesses.

Tua for your enlightened clarification of "worship" with respect to the Paut Shepsu Paut Neteru. Might I add, since there has been discussion on this board of science and how it relates to African religion, that the concept of ancestors is not to be relegated to "belief". As imhotep mentions there is a genetic component and thus a scientific basis for this practice among our people. When a fetus is conceived the cells making up that fetus are not new. That is to say they are formed through a mathematical process of CELL DIVISION where the cells formed through the egg of the mother and the sperm of the father are divided first in half, then into fourths, then eighths and so on. What this reveals is that ancestrally speaking the cells making up your body are thousands perhaps millions of years old. Add to this the concept, only recently "discovered" by western scientist, of cell memory and you perhaps can begin to understand the depths of knowledge held by our ancestors in formulating religions capable of exploring this complicated scientific phenomenon and using them to uplift man and woman.

I am glad you Tehuti, that you mentioned the doubling in the cells. This is the secret behind the doubling system in Kemetic mathematics. The generations can be broken down like this:
  • 2 = mother and father
  • 4 = mother & father and your moms parents
  • 8 = your mother and father and your mother's parents and your father's parents

and the list goes on and on. This system used in addition and multiplication, is at least 26,000 years old found on what is called the Ishango bones from Zaire. This was the prototype later adopted by the people of the Nile Valley. Nehesu people migrated in small spirts across the sahara to end up in west Africa. The same systems are used there. Cheikh Anta Diop makes the links quite apparent in basically all of his works.

But back to the topic. Although you may have been born on a specific contemporary date, you are technically millions of years old as the genes are still present within you. The memory is in the bones. This is why scientist always go for the marro (SP?) to date things and to find out exactly what happened thousands of years ago within a given population.

But all of our religious practices, in traditional Africa, is based on science and using that body of knowledge to manipulate energy to work to our advantage within this lifetime.
