The sky is a truly wondrous place. So many beautiful stars. Though random in their placement they occasionally form patterns or pictures called constellations. The ancient sky watchers must have had very good imaginations as they named hundreds of star pictures. They saw whales and swans and bears both big and small. Dolphins, lions, fish and hunters were all seen in the patterns of stars in the night sky by imaginative people all over the world. As the earth circles the Sun we see its position slowly shifting each day against the background of pictures created by the stars. It takes us one year to orbit the Sun and so from our point of view the Sun will slowly circle the sky and pass through twelve different star pictures in the course of a year. It will then repeat that same journey over and over again, year after year after year. These twelve star pictures or constellations form a circular path or road in the sky called the zodiac which translated from the original Greek means the circle of animals. The zodiac can serve as a road map which tells us where any planet is at any given time. The basic rule to learn about the signs is that each planet must express itself in the manner of the sign it is occupying.

Each constellation, star picture or sign of the zodiac is composed of two parts - its element which is either fire, earth, air or water and its quadruplicity which is either cardinal, fixed or mutable so named because each appears four times in the zodiac. Each of the signs is closely associated with a particular planet which is said to "rule" that sign. In addition, each of the signs also has either a masculine or feminine nature. The combination of all these attributes is what gives the signs their meaning. To an astrologer the signs will represent the manner in which the planets must express themselves as follows

Ü ARIES is a masculine cardinal fire sign ruled by the planet Mars. Its qualities are to be hasty, impulsive, assertive, aggressive, ambitious, eager, fast, pioneering, crude or basic and rather self-reliant. Any planet found in Aries is forced to act faster, more aggressively and more self oriented than it normally would. That planet would also act with less patience and forethought than normal. Why? Because our most important rule about the signs is that the planets must express themselves according to the nature of the sign in which they are found and Aries is the sign of unrestricted action.

� TAURUS is a feminine fixed earth sign ruled by the planet Venus. It's qualities are to be patient, stable, materialistic, possessive, dependable and sensual. This fixed earth sign is the most non yielding, stubborn sign in the zodiac. It is like a huge, unmovable rock. Any planet found in Taurus will become more materialistic, financially oriented, possessive, pleasure seeking and stubborn. Taurus lends stability and patience to any planet located within its borders as its essential nature is to resist change.

‚ GEMINI is a masculine mutable air sign ruled by Mercury. It's qualities are to be curious, inquisitive, clever, quick witted and mental or thought oriented. It is also changeable, restless, fickle, dualistic and communicative. Any planet found in Gemini will become more changeable, restless and inquisitive. This is why astrologers say that when the most changeable celestial body - the Moon - is found in Gemini the persons feelings (The Moon) are changing so rapidly that they aren't really sure just how they feel about anything.

ƒ CANCER is a feminine cardinal water sign ruled by The Moon. Its qualities are to be emotional, maternal, security oriented, protective, overly cautious, traditional, domestic and patriotic. Any planet found in the sign Cancer will seek to secure itself by symbolically growing a shell and becoming more protective. This is the sign of our highly emotional, nurturing, maternal and domestic instincts. Cancer is concerned with its home and family and their welfare, security and protection.

„ LEO is a masculine fixed fire sign ruled by The Sun. It's qualities are to be proud, dramatic, generous, fun, creative, romantic, pretentious, egotistic and vain. Any planet found in Leo will display itself in a dramatic, attention getting manner. This sign wants to have fun and is always looking for a way to become the center of attention. Leo is known as the sign of the showman.

…VIRGO is a feminine mutable earth sign ruled by Mercury. It is primarily service oriented. Virgo is a practical, analytical, studious, methodical, fastidious, detailed, clinical, hygienic and fussy sign. Any planets found in Virgo will become more methodical and detail oriented. It can do many things well in a very organized manner. Virgo is known as the sign of the craftsman.

† LIBRA is a masculine cardinal air sign ruled by Venus. Libra's qualities are to be assertively refined, communicative and partnership oriented. It is a very harmonious, cooperative, diplomatic and persuasive sign. Any planet found in the sign Libra will be more socially oriented, agreeable, charming and pleasant. Psychology is important to the sign Libra because it is so interested in others. It is correctly said that refined Libra doesn't like to get it's hands dirty. It also isn't that wild about offensive odors or anything crude. Libra is often too cooperative and indecisive as it tries to maintain an even keel.

‡ SCORPIO is a feminine fixed water sign ruled by Pluto. As the all or nothing sign it can be the most resourceful, controlling, passionate and jealous sign in the zodiac. Its qualities are to be, secretive, suspicious, transforming, regenerative and probing. Scorpio is the most powerful and intense sign of the zodiac because it deals with survival. Scorpio may appear to be quiet and calm on the surface but it carries a very potent sting. The expression "Still water runs deep" describes Scorpio quite well.

ˆ SAGITTARIUS is a masculine mutable fire sign ruled by Jupiter. It's qualities are to make any planet found in it more cheerful, optimistic, idealistic, enthusiastic, fair, honest, philosophical, freedom loving, risk taking, self-indulgent and blunt. Sagittarius is the ultimate jack of all trades and master of none because like all fire signs it becomes involved in everything enthusiastically and like all mutable signs it soon changes its objectives. It requires more patience, practicality and follow through.

‰CAPRICORN is a feminine cardinal earth sign ruled by Saturn. It is authoritative, traditional, serious and responsible. It is also self protective, cautious, careful, structured, distinguished, well mannered, old fashioned and status seeking. Capricorn is the sign of business and authority figures such as the government. Capricorn is not a particularly happy sign. It is a very serious, carefully ambitious sign that is highly respectful and desirous of authority.

Š AQUARIUS is a masculine fixed air sign ruled by Uranus. The fixed nature of Aquarius allows this sign the time to contemplate and therefore come up with deep and original ideas. Its original nature yields a strong disapproval of traditional, old fashioned, status quo type concepts. It is very independent, eccentric, inventive, humane, intelligent, unique and like all fixed signs more than a bit on the stubborn side. Any planet found in Aquarius will become more stubborn, independent and non traditional. Aquarius independently marches to the beat of a different drum, in it’s own unique manner.

‹PISCES is a feminine mutable water sign ruled by Neptune. Pisces is sensitive, timid, shy, humble, impressionable, compassionate, sympathetic, kind, intuitive, artistic, escapist and impractical. This is the most emotionally changeable and least realistic sign in the zodiac. It is also the kindest, most compassionate and most sympathetic sign in the zodiac. What it needs is more practicality, a lot more practicality.
