Thumbs up Astrology: The Houses

Astrology: The Houses

The houses of a horoscope represent twelve separate and distinct areas of your life. In essence they could be looked at as the worlds greatest cataloging system. Anything you can think of can be assigned to one of the houses by a qualified astrologer. Each of the planets must apply its particular energies to the areas of life that are governed by the house in which it is located. For example, if Venus, the planet of love, beauty and art was found in your tenth house of occupation, honor, status, reputation and authority figures you would have a natural love of status that would cause you to work well with authority figures and have a good reputation. However, if Venus were located in your fourth house of home and family you would love your beautiful home and would do everything you could to encourage a social and peaceful atmosphere. You were probably born with an innate sense of decorating and as the years go by your home will become more and more beautiful. It is also quite likely that certain of your family members would possess more than a little artistic talent. This is extremely simplistic astrology but the point is that a planet must work in the manner of the sign it was in at the time of your birth and it must apply its particular energies to the affairs connected with the house in which it is located. The areas of life associated with the houses are as follows:

1st HOUSE: The first house tells the astrologer how you appear to others on a personal, one to one basis. It concerns itself with your physical appearance, mannerisms, personality, identity and your sense of self-awareness. Any planet located here will have a profound effect on your mannerisms and appearance. The first house also deals with the early years of your life.

2nd HOUSE: The second house is the money house. It tells the astrologer about your earning capacity, spending habits, possessions (where you spend your money), savings, debt, values and your sense of self-worth. Planets found here will tell us about your attitude concerning money, how best to earn it and what you like to buy with it. Its four key concepts in order are a sense of self-worth, values, possessions and money. Elvis has Venus in the second house. Do you think he could have earned money in the arts? Or that his sense of self-worth was somehow connected to his artistic ability? Think about it.

3rd HOUSE: The third house is a composite house concerning a number of areas. It is closely associated with your thought process and communications, relatives, especially your brothers and sisters, neighbors, short travels and your means of transportation. One of my clients has the Sun in her third house and is most proud (the Sun) of her car. As a mental house the third tells us what you like to think about. It represents your education through high school while college is found in the opposite house, the ninth, which deals with your higher mind.

4th HOUSE: The fourth house of a horoscope concerns itself with your home and family. This is the foundation of the horoscope and represents your base of operations, beginnings and endings, roots and heredity. Your domestic life, home, real estate, land and its care, ecology, genealogy and circumstances in the second half of life are all found in the fourth house. One of your parents, usually but not always your mother, is associated with the fourth house while the other parent would be associated with the opposite house - the tenth. Even so parents as a unit are fourth house matters. While family is a fourth house concern some family members can be assigned to the surrounding houses. The third is specifically brothers and sisters and includes other relatives such as cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews while the fourth represents your parents and the whole family clan in general. The fifth is also somewhat family oriented as we will soon discover as this is the house of children and their education.

5th HOUSE: The fifth house is one of the most important sections of the horoscope and concerns itself with a number of consequential areas of your life including love and romance, children and their education, creativity and financial investments. Your pursuit of pleasure is the primary concern of this house which involves love and romance but also includes simple pleasures and enjoyments such as your hobbies and vacations. The fifth house also very much concerns itself with your children and their education. It tells the astrologer your attitude toward children and how you will deal with them. This is also the house of personal creativity and as such it rules your appreciation of and potential contribution to the theater and arts. Investments such as the stock market are fifth house matters as are more foolish investments such as gambling. This is a very powerful house which demands your attention.

6th HOUSE: The sixth house tells the astrologer about your job. It describes your working relations, conditions and sense of service. It also speaks of your coworkers and employees, attitudes concerning work and work related tools and equipment. This house is also very health oriented and deals with nutrition and hygiene. Two other sixth house issues are pets and clothing. People with Venus here tend to have nice wardrobes and truly love pets. One of my clients with Venus in the sixth house is a police officer. I remember telling him that he should consider the K-9 corps. He told me he'd been trying to develop a K-9 corps in his precinct for years but there had never been enough money. He was very surprised that I knew of his love for animals.

7th HOUSE: The seventh house deals with others. Its position is opposite the first house which primarily concerns itself with you and of course the opposite of you is the other. All dealings with the general public and therefore your public image are seventh house matters. It is rare for a public person such as a movie star or politician to not have a very active seventh house as they must have something going for them to account for their public appeal. Your public image is rarely what you really are and in fact the seventh house represents what you lack in yourself and need to be more complete. This is the house of partners, marriage and divorce. Planets found in this section of the horoscope tell us about your marriage and business partner, your agents or representatives, open enemies, dealings with the public and how successful or unsuccessful your marriage or partnerships will be.

8th HOUSE: The eighth house generally deals with joint finances, the financial resources of others and in particular the financial resources of your partner. Taxes, legacies, wills and insurance are also eighth houses concerns. Here we are dealing with money much as we are with the second house. The difference is that the second house is your money while its opposite, the eighth house, is other peoples money. But the eighth is a very powerful house dealing with more than just finances. Ones sexual drives are eighth house matters as are death and affairs of the dead. This is why legacies, wills and insurance are eighth house matters. This house is also very psychic. I once told a woman with the Moon in her eighth house that she was very interested in psychic matters because she had a desire to contact her departed (eighth house) family members (the Moon). Her jaw hit the desk as she told me that this was a secret no one knew. No one except an astrologer.

9th HOUSE: The ninth house deals with grand children, in-laws and what we optimistically call the upper or higher mind. Higher education, philosophy, the law, morals and religion are all ninth house matters. The ninth also deals with long distance travel just as it's opposite the third house deals with short distance or routine travel. Foreign countries and cultures are ruled by the ninth house as are the means of getting there such as planes and ships and it deals with both imports and exports. Elvis had Neptune in his ninth house and was very involved with metaphysical philosophies. Though it wasn't revealed to the public Elvis had a spiritual advisor, believed in reincarnation, astrology and numerology and successfully practiced healing by the laying on of hands with members of his band. He also considered college to be a complete waste of time which in itself is typical of misguided Neptune in the ninth.

10th HOUSE: The tenth house is a very powerful area of every horoscope. This is the top of the chart and represents your aim in life or what you strive to become. This area concerns itself with your professional or career aspirations, status, reputation, achievements and honor. Authority figures, bosses, the government and all those who exercise some control over your life are found in the tenth house. Ambition and the desire to achieve are tenth house matters as are both fame and infamy.

11th HOUSE: The eleventh house tells the astrologer about your friends and acquaintances. Are your friends primarily male or female? Are they beneficial for you or problematical? And what will those benefits or problems entail? Friends, groups, clubs and networking are all eleventh house matters. In addition, the eleventh house also deals with your goals, hopes and wishes. Because it is opposite the fifth house it will rule the love you receive as opposed to the love you give.

12th HOUSE: The twelfth house is the last house in the horoscope and deals with self undoing, problems, frustrations, sorrows and losses. Empathy, welfare, compassion and charity are also found in the twelfth house which is also a very psychic section of the horoscope. This house rules seclusion, restrictions, inhibitions and secrets including secret enemies, secret lovers and the secret mysteries of the universe. It also deals with places of confinement such as jails, hospitals, nursing homes and institutions. If the twelfth house concerns itself with problems and if Mercury deals with our senses, thought process and communications, would you think if Mercury were located here that learning difficulties such as dyslexia or other problems with sense perception or communications could manifest? That would be a very reasonable assumption. I have a number of clients with The Moon in their twelfth house. Most have experienced major problems with their mothers and other family members.

The preceding article was a brief outline of the meaning of the houses. It was taken from Part I of Kissing Astrology and is therefore protected by its copyright.

Thumbs up Astrology: Aspects

Now let's take a moment for a quick recap of what we have just read. Aspects are the angular relationships between the planets and are an important part of reading a horoscope. They are so very powerful because they combine the strength of two or more planets. Conjunctions are aspects of power, sextiles and trines are positive and harmonious aspects while squares and oppositions are negative or stressful aspects. We also learned that the horoscopes of famous individuals are often riddled with stressful aspects and that it is by working to overcome the effects of these negative influences that greatly contributes to their well earned success. We learned that conjunctions exist when two planets are found together in a horoscope. Sextiles occur when two planets are sixty degrees apart while a trine is found when two planets are twice that distance or one hundred and twenty degrees apart. A square exists when two planets are ninety degrees apart while an opposition is twice that distance or one hundred and eighty degrees apart. So a sextile is half a trine and a square is half of an opposition. This indicates why a sextile and trine are similar aspects. They are related. The same obviously applies to the square and opposition. Now that wasn’t so difficult to learn was it?

Now I am going to tell you a few stories. The intent of these stories is to show you just how incredibly powerful the aspects can be and hopefully that will motivate you to apply yourself and learn all that you can about the angular relationship between the planets. We will begin with the icon of genius for the 20th century, Dr. Albert Einstein.

E = MC 2
Mercury conjunct Saturn

Let's take a look at Einstein's horoscope. The secret of his ability to use his incomprehensibly vast mind in a logical, structured and disciplined manner is found in his Mercury Saturn conjunction. Jupiter expanding the third house of his lower mind and Uranus the planet of genius in the ninth house of his higher mind certainly helped contribute to an intellect second to none. But it is Saturn's conjunction with Mercury that gave structure, depth and follow through to a thought process that naturally wanted to work in an impulsive, hasty and pioneering manner just as it must when Mercury is located in aggressive Aries. Saturn conjunct Mercury gave Einstein the ability to concentrate and give form and structure to his thoughts. Without this aspect Einstein would not have had the natural mathematical ability to understand and express E = MC2 as Mercury Saturn aspects are often found in the horoscopes of engineers, mathematicians and statisticians. Without this aspect he would still have been brilliant as this is truly the horoscope of a genius but unrestricted by the rules of mathematics his mind would have wandered hasty and undisciplined into other less structured arenas. Mercury Saturn aspects are often very intelligent. Even the negative ones. Sir Isaac Newton and Benjamin Franklin each had Mercury squared by Saturn and it certainly doesn't seem to slowed either of them very much. If fact, both Albert Einstein and Nikola Tesla, two of the brightest lights of the 20th century each had a Mercury Saturn conjunction. This is just one more example of Saturn working in a manner that proves it is so very much more than just the "Greater Malefic" of the ancient texts. Saturn gives form, structure and a sense of reality to any planet it aspects. It would seem that Saturn conjunct Mercury is what made Einstein realistic about relativity.

I love the story concerning the time astronomers were giving Mrs. Einstein a tour of a new observatory. They told her they were using this extremely expensive State-Of-The-Art technology to peer deep into space and unlock the mysteries of the universe. She replied that her husband did the same thing but he did it with a pencil on the back of a post card.

"I HAVE A DREAM"
Jupiter trine Neptune

Now let's look at the horoscope of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Here we see a compassionate individual with the Moon in Pisces combined with a drive for prominence with the Sun in the tenth house. But this story deals with the angular relationships that occur between the planets so let's look at his Jupiter Neptune trine. The moralistic and religious nature of Jupiter is greatly enhanced by the harmonious trine aspect with the spiritual, compassionate and self sacrificing nature of Neptune's highest ideals. This aspect is actually the personification of the visionary dreams of utopian ideals so eloquently expressed in the fundamental belief that all men are created equal. The racist indignities endured by the innocent citizens of the land of freedom were exposed naked and ugly by this pacifist prophet as he assured a nation that we shall overcome. In the midst of hatred, bigotry and violence he never wavered, never hesitated and never compromised the nonviolent ideals of Jupiter trine Neptune. In 1958 he wrote, "An eye for an eye leaves everybody blind" and at age 35 was the youngest man to ever be awarded the Nobel Prize for peace. In his last days he told us, "I have seen the promised land". The trine aspect between his Jupiter and Neptune tells us that he did indeed "see" the "promised land" and with Mercury in the tenth he possessed the ability to communicate his vision with a purifying compassion that transcended oppression. Sharing the philosophy and ultimately the destiny of Mahatmas Gandhi, he was the heart and soul of the civil rights movement while so eloquently expressing the essence of his horoscope, his Jupiter Neptune trine.

SOYBEANS
Jupiter, Pluto Ascendant

Many years ago in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I was contacted by the senior analyst of a major brokerage firm to predict the outcome of the Soybean Commodities Market. He told me in our initial interview that he had an open mind concerning astrology because his mother had consulted astrologers when he was a child. He seemed to recall that many of their predictions had come true and so he wondered if astrology could also be applied to the market. He went on to say that his own research indicated that Soy Beans could be ready for a major rise and wondered if astrology could validate his assumptions. I assured him that although I had no personal experience in this area my knowledge of astrology mandated that it could be done and in fact there are a number of books on the subject. I told him I required specific information that he was more than willing to provide and so off I went with a positive attitude to solve the great stock market mystery. While analyzing the horoscope, I noticed Transiting Jupiter, the planet of expansion and Solar Arc Directed Pluto, the planet of intensity were about to form a conjunction aspect with a very important point in its chart. (The Ascendant) It wasn't very difficult to come to the simple conclusion that at the time of the upcoming conjunction the stock would expand at an almost explosive rate. And so it did, exactly when it was supposed to. That was my first experience with the stock market and astrology. My last has yet to occur.

MONEY $ MONEY $ MONEY
Jupiter conjunct Pluto

Speaking of Jupiter Pluto aspects, Bill Gates of Microsoft has Jupiter conjunct Pluto in his second house of money. Jupiter Pluto always equates to an intense expansion. When found in the second house of finances it would seem reasonable to conclude that this aspect would have a powerful effect on ones finances. So, just how much is old Bill - the richest man in the world - worth these days? As the late astronomer Carl Sagan would have said, "Billions and Billions."

OUR BUDDY
Moon trine Ascendant

It was the most beautiful day you could ever imagine at the race track in Sante Fe, New Mexico. The sky was blue, the girls were pretty and Jupiter was strong in my horoscope. The horses were running their hearts out and the crowd was screaming at the top of its lungs. They had just completed the final turn and were coming to the point in the race where the track announcer yells "And down the stretch they come" when my horse began to power his way to the front of the pack. He was obviously the strongest horse in the race and was rapidly on his way to assuming his rightful place in the winners circle. Normally this is where I would awaken and grudgingly shift from the warm and cozy world of dreams to the somewhat harsher realities of mornings. Perhaps a moment to reflect on the power of dreams and then some coffee to make the transition easier. But this was no dream. This was a very real and never to be forgotten moment in my life. Caught up in the excitement, my friends and I screamed our horse on to victory. His name was Our Buddy and he was the first horse I had ever picked with a horoscope.

Now don't for a moment think I had nothing better to do that day and decided to gamble on the ponies with astrology. Gambling implies a risk or hazard and you should never place your hard earned money in hazardous situations. I was hired to accomplish this task by a man who heard me speaking on the radio. Although I had no experience in this area at the time I knew I could teach myself how to analyze the winner of a horse race because just a few years earlier the government had spent a considerable amount of time and money teaching me how to analyze data. With the analytical skills I had accumulated in a misspent four year military internment with the intelligence branch of The United States Air Force and the astrological knowledge that I already possessed there was no question in my mind that it would only be a matter of time before I would be able to correctly pick a winning race horse or most anything else for that matter with a horoscope. My selection of Our Buddy was actually based on more than a months research at the track collecting and analyzing the horoscopes of more than a hundred races. This research taught me that the name of the winning horse could more often than not be found in a horoscope made for the time of the race and that certain aspects were often strikingly indicative of the horses name. Why this is so is beyond the scope of this story. The important point is that this is the way that it is.

I worked very hard on those charts deep into the night and remember telling Margo, my girlfriend at the time, that before I made my selections I wanted them to be firmly grounded in a system that was based on observation, experimentation and experience. Margo was great company at the track that summer due to her quick witted personality. I remember her telling everyone who would listen that astrology could pick the winner of the race because horses had no free will. Unfortunately, Margo knew very little about horses, astrology or the concept of free will but she easily kept me in my place that summer by correctly picking a ninety nine to one long shot named Pleasant Prince. Her expert analysis was based on the fact that both the horse and jockey were cute. On the way home she informed me that her system was also based on observation, experimentation and experience.

What was the deciding factor that caused me to pick Our Buddy from the list of horses running in that particular race? Aspects of course - aspects. Besides the inside information extracted from that horoscope which included an indication that the betting favorite could not possibly win the race, Our Buddy was the one horse that accurately fit the only aspect in effect at the moment of the race. Reinhold Ebertin interpreted that aspect in his classic work, The Combination Of Stellar Influences, as "A harmonious behavior in the presence of others." The horoscope did not spell out the words Our Buddy, but to me it whispered his name in the most seductive manner possible.

Do you think it was just a coincidence that Our Buddy won that horse race so many years ago or that the soybean market exploded when it did? That is certainly a possibility. However, I have a great love of sports and a healthy fear of poverty. So it was only natural that over the years this astrologer would apply the lessons he learned to these areas of life. As a result, I have correctly predicted the outcome of more than a hundred sporting events and numerous stocks and commodities over the last three decades much to my economic delight. I believe it is reasonable to conclude that we are well past the possibility stage.

I want you to understand that my primary purpose for sharing these stories, especially the personal ones, is to reach as deep into your heart and mind as my limited abilities enable me to encourage you to put forth the extra effort required to master the aspects. In this particular case I believe that if you knew it was possible to do things as seemingly magical and diverse as predicting the outcome of the stock market or even more bizarre, a horse race, it should motivate you to apply yourself to learn how to combine the meaning of the planets to understand the concept of aspects. Normally it is that little extra effort that is the only real difference between success and failure and I very much want you to be successful in your studies. Otherwise, why bother writing on this or any other subject? So, now that we are in the proper frame of mind, let us continue our learning adventure and return to the subject of the aspects.

The preceding stories were taken directly from Part II of Kissing Astrology. We hope you found them useful and that they encourage your interest in astrology. Please keep in mind that these stories are protected by their copyright
