Now let's take a moment for a quick recap of what we have just read. Aspects are the angular relationships between the planets and are an important part of reading a horoscope. They are so very powerful because they combine the strength of two or more planets. Conjunctions are aspects of power, sextiles and trines are positive and harmonious aspects while squares and oppositions are negative or stressful aspects. We also learned that the horoscopes of famous individuals are often riddled with stressful aspects and that it is by working to overcome the effects of these negative influences that greatly contributes to their well earned success. We learned that conjunctions exist when two planets are found together in a horoscope. Sextiles occur when two planets are sixty degrees apart while a trine is found when two planets are twice that distance or one hundred and twenty degrees apart. A square exists when two planets are ninety degrees apart while an opposition is twice that distance or one hundred and eighty degrees apart. So a sextile is half a trine and a square is half of an opposition. This indicates why a sextile and trine are similar aspects. They are related. The same obviously applies to the square and opposition. Now that wasn’t so difficult to learn was it? Now I am going to tell you a few stories. The intent of these stories is to show you just how incredibly powerful the aspects can be and hopefully that will motivate you to apply yourself and learn all that you can about the angular relationship between the planets. We will begin with the icon of genius for the 20th century, Dr. Albert Einstein. E = MC 2 Mercury conjunct Saturn Let's take a look at Einstein's horoscope. The secret of his ability to use his incomprehensibly vast mind in a logical, structured and disciplined manner is found in his Mercury Saturn conjunction. Jupiter expanding the third house of his lower mind and Uranus the planet of genius in the ninth house of his higher mind certainly helped contribute to an intellect second to none. But it is Saturn's conjunction with Mercury that gave structure, depth and follow through to a thought process that naturally wanted to work in an impulsive, hasty and pioneering manner just as it must when Mercury is located in aggressive Aries. Saturn conjunct Mercury gave Einstein the ability to concentrate and give form and structure to his thoughts. Without this aspect Einstein would not have had the natural mathematical ability to understand and express E = MC2 as Mercury Saturn aspects are often found in the horoscopes of engineers, mathematicians and statisticians. Without this aspect he would still have been brilliant as this is truly the horoscope of a genius but unrestricted by the rules of mathematics his mind would have wandered hasty and undisciplined into other less structured arenas. Mercury Saturn aspects are often very intelligent. Even the negative ones. Sir Isaac Newton and Benjamin Franklin each had Mercury squared by Saturn and it certainly doesn't seem to slowed either of them very much. If fact, both Albert Einstein and Nikola Tesla, two of the brightest lights of the 20th century each had a Mercury Saturn conjunction. This is just one more example of Saturn working in a manner that proves it is so very much more than just the "Greater Malefic" of the ancient texts. Saturn gives form, structure and a sense of reality to any planet it aspects. It would seem that Saturn conjunct Mercury is what made Einstein realistic about relativity. I love the story concerning the time astronomers were giving Mrs. Einstein a tour of a new observatory. They told her they were using this extremely expensive State-Of-The-Art technology to peer deep into space and unlock the mysteries of the universe. She replied that her husband did the same thing but he did it with a pencil on the back of a post card. "I HAVE A DREAM" Jupiter trine Neptune Now let's look at the horoscope of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Here we see a compassionate individual with the Moon in Pisces combined with a drive for prominence with the Sun in the tenth house. But this story deals with the angular relationships that occur between the planets so let's look at his Jupiter Neptune trine. The moralistic and religious nature of Jupiter is greatly enhanced by the harmonious trine aspect with the spiritual, compassionate and self sacrificing nature of Neptune's highest ideals. This aspect is actually the personification of the visionary dreams of utopian ideals so eloquently expressed in the fundamental belief that all men are created equal. The racist indignities endured by the innocent citizens of the land of freedom were exposed naked and ugly by this pacifist prophet as he assured a nation that we shall overcome. In the midst of hatred, bigotry and violence he never wavered, never hesitated and never compromised the nonviolent ideals of Jupiter trine Neptune. In 1958 he wrote, "An eye for an eye leaves everybody blind" and at age 35 was the youngest man to ever be awarded the Nobel Prize for peace. In his last days he told us, "I have seen the promised land". The trine aspect between his Jupiter and Neptune tells us that he did indeed "see" the "promised land" and with Mercury in the tenth he possessed the ability to communicate his vision with a purifying compassion that transcended oppression. Sharing the philosophy and ultimately the destiny of Mahatmas Gandhi, he was the heart and soul of the civil rights movement while so eloquently expressing the essence of his horoscope, his Jupiter Neptune trine. SOYBEANS Jupiter, Pluto Ascendant Many years ago in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I was contacted by the senior analyst of a major brokerage firm to predict the outcome of the Soybean Commodities Market. He told me in our initial interview that he had an open mind concerning astrology because his mother had consulted astrologers when he was a child. He seemed to recall that many of their predictions had come true and so he wondered if astrology could also be applied to the market. He went on to say that his own research indicated that Soy Beans could be ready for a major rise and wondered if astrology could validate his assumptions. I assured him that although I had no personal experience in this area my knowledge of astrology mandated that it could be done and in fact there are a number of books on the subject. I told him I required specific information that he was more than willing to provide and so off I went with a positive attitude to solve the great stock market mystery. While analyzing the horoscope, I noticed Transiting Jupiter, the planet of expansion and Solar Arc Directed Pluto, the planet of intensity were about to form a conjunction aspect with a very important point in its chart. (The Ascendant) It wasn't very difficult to come to the simple conclusion that at the time of the upcoming conjunction the stock would expand at an almost explosive rate. And so it did, exactly when it was supposed to. That was my first experience with the stock market and astrology. My last has yet to occur. MONEY $ MONEY $ MONEY Jupiter conjunct Pluto Speaking of Jupiter Pluto aspects, Bill Gates of Microsoft has Jupiter conjunct Pluto in his second house of money. Jupiter Pluto always equates to an intense expansion. When found in the second house of finances it would seem reasonable to conclude that this aspect would have a powerful effect on ones finances. So, just how much is old Bill - the richest man in the world - worth these days? As the late astronomer Carl Sagan would have said, "Billions and Billions." OUR BUDDY Moon trine Ascendant It was the most beautiful day you could ever imagine at the race track in Sante Fe, New Mexico. The sky was blue, the girls were pretty and Jupiter was strong in my horoscope. The horses were running their hearts out and the crowd was screaming at the top of its lungs. They had just completed the final turn and were coming to the point in the race where the track announcer yells "And down the stretch they come" when my horse began to power his way to the front of the pack. He was obviously the strongest horse in the race and was rapidly on his way to assuming his rightful place in the winners circle. Normally this is where I would awaken and grudgingly shift from the warm and cozy world of dreams to the somewhat harsher realities of mornings. Perhaps a moment to reflect on the power of dreams and then some coffee to make the transition easier. But this was no dream. This was a very real and never to be forgotten moment in my life. Caught up in the excitement, my friends and I screamed our horse on to victory. His name was Our Buddy and he was the first horse I had ever picked with a horoscope. Now don't for a moment think I had nothing better to do that day and decided to gamble on the ponies with astrology. Gambling implies a risk or hazard and you should never place your hard earned money in hazardous situations. I was hired to accomplish this task by a man who heard me speaking on the radio. Although I had no experience in this area at the time I knew I could teach myself how to analyze the winner of a horse race because just a few years earlier the government had spent a considerable amount of time and money teaching me how to analyze data. With the analytical skills I had accumulated in a misspent four year military internment with the intelligence branch of The United States Air Force and the astrological knowledge that I already possessed there was no question in my mind that it would only be a matter of time before I would be able to correctly pick a winning race horse or most anything else for that matter with a horoscope. My selection of Our Buddy was actually based on more than a months research at the track collecting and analyzing the horoscopes of more than a hundred races. This research taught me that the name of the winning horse could more often than not be found in a horoscope made for the time of the race and that certain aspects were often strikingly indicative of the horses name. Why this is so is beyond the scope of this story. The important point is that this is the way that it is. I worked very hard on those charts deep into the night and remember telling Margo, my girlfriend at the time, that before I made my selections I wanted them to be firmly grounded in a system that was based on observation, experimentation and experience. Margo was great company at the track that summer due to her quick witted personality. I remember her telling everyone who would listen that astrology could pick the winner of the race because horses had no free will. Unfortunately, Margo knew very little about horses, astrology or the concept of free will but she easily kept me in my place that summer by correctly picking a ninety nine to one long shot named Pleasant Prince. Her expert analysis was based on the fact that both the horse and jockey were cute. On the way home she informed me that her system was also based on observation, experimentation and experience. What was the deciding factor that caused me to pick Our Buddy from the list of horses running in that particular race? Aspects of course - aspects. Besides the inside information extracted from that horoscope which included an indication that the betting favorite could not possibly win the race, Our Buddy was the one horse that accurately fit the only aspect in effect at the moment of the race. Reinhold Ebertin interpreted that aspect in his classic work, The Combination Of Stellar Influences, as "A harmonious behavior in the presence of others." The horoscope did not spell out the words Our Buddy, but to me it whispered his name in the most seductive manner possible. Do you think it was just a coincidence that Our Buddy won that horse race so many years ago or that the soybean market exploded when it did? That is certainly a possibility. However, I have a great love of sports and a healthy fear of poverty. So it was only natural that over the years this astrologer would apply the lessons he learned to these areas of life. As a result, I have correctly predicted the outcome of more than a hundred sporting events and numerous stocks and commodities over the last three decades much to my economic delight. I believe it is reasonable to conclude that we are well past the possibility stage. I want you to understand that my primary purpose for sharing these stories, especially the personal ones, is to reach as deep into your heart and mind as my limited abilities enable me to encourage you to put forth the extra effort required to master the aspects. In this particular case I believe that if you knew it was possible to do things as seemingly magical and diverse as predicting the outcome of the stock market or even more bizarre, a horse race, it should motivate you to apply yourself to learn how to combine the meaning of the planets to understand the concept of aspects. Normally it is that little extra effort that is the only real difference between success and failure and I very much want you to be successful in your studies. Otherwise, why bother writing on this or any other subject? So, now that we are in the proper frame of mind, let us continue our learning adventure and return to the subject of the aspects. The preceding stories were taken directly from Part II of Kissing Astrology. We hope you found them useful and that they encourage your interest in astrology.
