Prince Charles donates to help rebuild Mississippi

WASHINGTON, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Britain's Prince Charles, whose passion for architecture won him a $25,000 prize on Thursday, said he planned to donate the money to help rebuild communities in hurricane-ravaged Mississippi.

"My wife and I were utterly horrified to see the terrible scenes of destruction wrought by the hurricane across New Orleans and the surrounding area," Charles told a gathering at the National Building Museum, where he was accompanied by his wife, Camilla.

"Tomorrow we will have the opportunity to meet the brave and resilient people trying to rebuild their lives and to pay tribute to the astonishing efforts of the emergency workers," Charles said. "I only hope that my foundation can play a small part in the work that is now under way to begin reconstruction."

The prince said the prize money would go to his Foundation for the Built Environment. He said the foundation sent a design team to Mississippi last month and had produced designs to help rebuild nine towns on the Gulf Coast.

Officials at the building museum, a cavernous space built in 1881 as a place to administer U.S. Civil War pensions, gave the prince the Vincent Scully Prize, recognizing his contributions to architecture and urban design.

Charles has been a vocal critic of architecture built after World War Two and an advocate for a return to traditionalism and buildings that fit in with their context. Two exhibits at the museum -- one on traditionalist architecture and another celebrating the prince's School of Traditional Arts in London -- open this week.

Charles and Camilla, married last April but lovers for three decades, were on their first formal U.S. visit as a married couple.

Washington has traditionally been warm to British royalty, but particularly took to Diana, the prince's ex-wife, who was killed in a Paris car crash in 1997.

Charles and Camilla engaged in a round-table discussion of osteoporosis earlier on Thursday at the National Institutes of Health. Camilla's mother and grandmother died from the disease.

Later, the two headed for Georgetown University for a seminar on religious faith, followed by a reception at the British ambassador's residence.

On Friday, the royal schedule includes a wreath-laying ceremony at the Second World War memorial, a stop at the Folger Shakespeare Library and visits to New Orleans and San Francisco.

Can you believe that the estimated net worth of the so-called royals of the U.K. is $10 billion? They're not better than anyone else and it is a shame that several dozen individuals could possess so much wealth when over a billion people on this planet make less than $2 per day. Make those royals work for a living like everyone else and give that money to the impoverished people who could make good use of it, like obtaining decent food and housing. The "royal" famlies of Europe are spoiled rotten, as illustrated by their mansions and multimillion dollar jewels.

Interesting because the US was offered many things by various countries around the world and they wouldn’t take many offers. South America offer to send doctors to assist those affected by the hurricane and what do the U.S. government do but rejected the offer. Bet if they were white Jews all hell would have broke out.


There is a smell in the air that many Brits don't agree with having a monarchy, however, there are ole Brits who will forever want their culture and tradition to remain intact; interesting enough that the Prince Charles donors this money, Diana was a great humanitarian and more loved by the American people than he...

I think his investment would be more suited to help increase the pool of Afro-Caribbean Brits; he could use his money by improving the accommodation of black folk throughout England and by eliminating hate group like the BNP before he cross the pond to help old Nazi Mississippi: please, why aren't there more Black British tutors? And, why aren't their wages comparable to Europeans lecturers and researchers? What about university places, why are there still limited places awarded to Black Brits? What is he doing to combat the issue of teenage pregnancy in this jack-up country? Why not used the money to re-educate young people about sex and consequences of such? What about the high proportion of Black British males incarcerated? How can he adjust the system and focus on the family, why are they getting lock-up? What about the high percentage of black folk working in menial jobs or receiving benefits, how can he improve their social realities in society? Hell, I could go on all day, the moral of this story is: clean-up your own house before crossing the pond to provide for others.

Yes. Recently, the fact was reiterated (for me) that Cuba was ready to deploy 1600 doctors with medical supplies and medical equipment but the united snakkkes rejected them. Damn shame.

Prince Charles is also Honourary Officer Commanding of the Parachute Regiment, the notorious British unit that committed the Bloody Sunday atrocity. There has never been any move to make him responsible for the crimes his regiment committed in Ireland.
