Feeding the ancestors

Alaafia,

This is a wonderful thread! Ase to you all!

I'd like to caution those who feed chocolate to their ancestors and the divinities. Please take a careful look at the label for the ingredients. If it contains palm kernal oil do not feed. Palm kernal oil is the taboo of of all the Orishas and the ancestors as well.

Another reason to really give thought to offering chocolate is the fact that our children in Afrika are tricked and sold into slavery in order for oyinbos make owo.

Also as you work with egbe Egungun and your recent ancestor begin to evolve, afrikan foods, such as akara, amala, egusi, moimoi, gari and other foods may be offered and will be accepted with glee by your ancestors. We must always remember we all have those ancestors that "were" from the beginning of time. They would enjoy a plate of traditional afrikan food from time to time, along with some palm wine.

May you all be blessed by your ancestors.

In service,

HRG Princess Ademide Adinasse

Feed the Ancestors

Kiambote, It's good to have some type of Ancestor stick and a shrine set up with a clean white cloth, 7 or 9 clean glasses filled with fresh water, some white flowers, a white candle, a cigar and all the pictures of your passed away family members all placed on the shrine. At least once a week it is good to clean the glasses and refill them with fresh water, light the candle and start tapping your concentrated Ancestor stick speaking whatever is on your mind, feeding your stick by spraying rum on it and blowing cigar smoke doing same with the shrine as well. It's also good for some to place the favorite foods of your Ancestors on white plates to be placed on the strine. Feeding your Ancestors makes them stronger so they can make you stronger, to protect and help you and the rest of your family a whole lot better in everyday situations each time you feed them, as your Ancestors grow so do you grow as well . Peace and blessings...
Somehow I was guided back into this circle and what a blessing because I took down my altar last year and haven't had the time to actually set it back up. I've been getting a calling to set up my altar work again for my ancestors and one of the first threads I end up in is this one! Ase' for the ancestral movement here to guide me back on track!
Peace n' Blessings Sistas n' Brothers

Talking there are books to help

Greetings,

I just wanted to inform people of a book that is extremely helpful when trying to connect with your ancestors and your spirituality, regardless of your religious choice. A book that I have found most informative (and inexpensive considering the information presented) is "The Quest for spiritual transformation..." by Nana Akua Kyerewaa Opokuwaa. This book does everything from telling you about Akan history in America, to the how to connect with your ancestors, to rights de passage. You can purchase the book online at major stores (barnes and noble, borders, amazon, etc.) You can also visit afsani.orgfor more information and inspiration. I hope this helps.

B-Inspired & B-Blessed,
Blkpwrprincess

Cool the reality of over-generalizing

I will caution people when discussing rituals and the do's and dont's to not generalize...what practices are good for you and the religion that you are identifying with does not represent other religions. If you are lookin for ways to worship and pay homage to dieties and ancestors you need to know who/what intermediaries you are talking about and under what religion/spiritual instruction--their likes and dislikes (the premise of taboos). If your ancestors don't like something you will know. Usually ancestral alters are comprised of some essential items (pictures of your ancestors w/out living people in the photo, incense, candles, drink, flowers, fruit, etc.), but the things that your personal ancestors liked (cola, tobacco, wine/beer/whiskey, hat, scarf, favorite foods, etc) are also on the alter--regardless of the ingredients...that is the only time where many religions do not observe certain taboos because it is not about the religion it is about paying homage to your ancestors (who may not have participated in the religion or adhered to the taboos herein. LOL Just don't eat the chocolate if it is taboo for you. Your personal ancestral alter is just that. It is the place YOU go when YOU need help or need to connect or pay homage to YOUR ancestors. Rarely is there set protocol on how to set up your ancestral altar..what should and shouldn't be on their. You know what your ancestors like and you know what they dislike...you also know what essential things are needed in order to set your spirit at rest when you are sitting in front of your ancestral altar.

And If you've never been to benin you should visit---it is so powerful to walk through Ouidah and the route the captives walked through villages to get to Ouidah. It is very powerful and unforgettable.

B-Blessed,

Our Entire Life is an ALTAR!

I strongly believe that our entire existence is an ALTAR dedicated to our ANCESTORS...and i also have a special place for my father in particular, but for The Elders Of Rhythm especially. it is also my recording studio,(where i am in constant conversation with them) and it is always a packed and protected house!
But, i feel the greatest offering one can give is their love and efforts to freeing our Collective Spirit of negative energy! this earth is our altar, and she needs us to LOVE EDUCATION!

For Jah built a candle in the soul that don't never extinguish....

i am grateful to have come across this information. My mother died a bout 2 months ago. My mother practiced Santeria. I would always go to the botanica and buy her candles and have them blessed for her. I plan on sectioning off a corner at both my house and my job and placing candles in both areas.
