There are numerous soul food resturaunts, barber shops/beauty salons, car details and mobile washes in Indy. Our last Afrikan bookstore closed last year So I am now forced to buy reading materials online. I co-own a small business, movies clothes and music mostly. I am VERY interested in opening a bookstore/cafe, spa or perhaps a health food store and hopefully open a grocery store...something that is NEEDED in our communites, ya know? I AM proud of the amount of Brothers and Sisters buying real esate. Our people are making $$$ buying up old "ghetto" property and selling it at higher rates due to the sudden rash of gentrification.
The downfalls of most black businesses (that I have personally witnessed) is:
1) We open the SAME types of businesses OVER and OVER- ie, barber shops and beauty salons, resturaunts.
2) The notorious "hook-up" I get a lil PO'ed when people come in and ask for a hook up yet dont ask big companies like Best Buy for a hook-up and pay full price with a smile Our prices wouldnt be a dollar or two higher if our people would spend with us
3) Spending of profits instead of re-investing it in the business.
