Dora the Explorer

Dora the Explorer

I have seem some very haunting cartoons and puppets and things on Nick and Cartoon Network. Some of them, I would not even show a dog. For example Yo Gabba Gabba...a black man in paint and suit that performs songs that are hip-hop like to ?help? kids learn... more like promote stereotyping as young as possible. Or like the black boy on Billy and Mandy(one that I frequently watch for the sarcastic humor) who is a big time loser...worse then Billy type loser. And even The Einsteins, the black boy was on there b-bopping one time.

So.....
Where does Dora the Explorer stand?

I like her, personally. But I was at work and this white lady would not buy her daughter the Dora the Explorer book, instead telling her that she will get a "princess book"....so i tapped my chin...and thought:

"Who is Dora to us? Is she our children's Spanish-speaking friend with darkly tanned skin--red skin? Or is she becoming another replacement for our black selves, instead of the African well-loved cartoon character who just so happens to speak an African Traditional language? Or perhaps...both?"

Answers please.

I watched Yo Gabba Gabba while pretty much stuck lying on the floor with a thrown out back weeks ago...It was irritating as hell.

But.....It was better than watching the wonder pets though. I can't stand them. I'm still waiting for all of them to get eaten just so that the horrid singing will stop forever.

But to answer your question; I don't think she is either. I think we have been pre-empted period.

The Backyardigans is one of the better shows.

LOL@ pretty much stuck on the floor with a thrown out back...

I agree, we have to be preempted. I long for the day to walk into the store and see nothing but black dolls and books and culturally-reflective entertainment....and, perhaps, watching a white person trying to select which black doll she wants for her daughter...and finding only a few nearly white ones, still with thick hair and features like we have...lol.

I haven't heard of Yo Gabba Gabba and I do give my daughter Dora the Explorer toys because I think should learn a 2nd language for the future.

But I can't stand Billy and Mandy because of the little black boy characters. He is nothing more then a racial stereo type that likes the Mandy characters that threats him like shit but he still wants to be with her.

But racism in cartoons is nothing new http://www.cracked.com/article_15677...haracters.html

But I think Dora is OK but there needs to be an Afrikan cartoon........and Gullah Gullah needs to be brought back because my little girl needs to dance to her own people and "Binya Binya polliwog"(the frog thing)

The Backyardigans is one of the better shows.

I hadn't seen Yo Gabba Gabba until today...First, it was this dude with a HUGE beatbox radio and a bright orange leisure suit type thing on. I thought to myself "What the hell?..." They were talking about germs...my sun looked at his breakfast and said "It's germssssss on this toast! It was germs on that toast..." (A piece of bread had fell on the floor on the show) I think I will stick to leaving the TV off child gonna be malnourished watching that stuff.

That damned duck thing on wonder pets drives me crazy...Mamazen...I just want you to know you have me DYING over here

Now to the question at hand...

I like Dora, although some of that stuff gets irritating (Like that friggin map song...or SWIPER NO SWIPING!)

Its kinda hard for me to say Dora is wrong, and we should have our own cartoon. We are quite a diverse people. Many of our people speak many different languages, and spanish is one of them. Maybe a multilingual Afrikan based cartoon would be ideal.
For the record, I have NEVER seen an Afrikan cartoon of the same ilk as Dora...hell, the only Afrikan cartoons I have seen is Fat Albert and the Jackson 5 and that one with the girl and the twins...I forgot the name of that one.

It was a good thing I had only taken tylenol for pain....cause I could have sworn I had been hallucinating otherwise. Those critters (including beatbox man) look...they just look...words fail me at this point.

Now Ming Ming (the wonder pet duck) needs to grow up and become my dinner. I have not had duck in weeks.

Oh man! I used to watch "Gullah Gullah Island" religiously! That show was nice; it felt good to see my people up there on the screen teaching me about various things (not to mention throwing in the Gullah culture and language into the show). I want some re-runs! Lol
