| Introduction
I just joined. Not really sure what to say. I'll leave what I've been working on.. PEACE!! Margaret Hello - Below is an email that I sent to Dr. Daniel Gelo - Dean of COLFA. There is problem withe the African American studies program and it looks like the classes are slowly dying. every semester, this program loses classes for no other reason than the adminsitration does not care to faciliatate them. Further, it's odd to me how these classes can be lost when Professor Frederick Williams is already here and has done them. Why isn't he given the opportunity to continue facitating these classes? It should make you wonder why he is not getting them when most students look for him to do them now... It is clear to me that the administration does not care about what happens to these classes, regardless of the fact that students WANT to take them. Please take a few minutes to read my email and send one of your own to Dr. Gelo and let him know that you support the continued growth of this program. If you can't, then please pass this on... Dr. Gelo's email is daniel.gelo@utsa.edu Thanks, Margaret. Dr. Gelo, Good morning. In viewing what classes are available for next semester, it has come to my attention that POL 1213 (Civil Rights) has not been assigned a professor and POL 3203 (African American Political Thought) has been cancelled. WHY?! If the reason is because no professor will take these classes, then have you considered Professor Frederick Williams? He already does the classes, so why not make sure he can facilitate them? Personally, I have already taken both of these classes with Professor Williams and he is the man for the job. He is already here and students respect him, so what gives? What is the hold up? Students continue to ask for these classes and desire to take them, however someone obviously has seen fit to abandon them by not offering these classes. WHY?! It may not be my place to inquire about this but I know that there are plenty of students who want to take these classes and would sign up for them if administration would recognize that a part of their obligation is to make sure that students are heard and given every opportunity to take classes that will enrich their college education. Classes in the African American Studies Minor do that. It is my belief that UTSA administration, especially the administration in the Department of Political Science & Geography, has been negligent in providing proper support for the growth and development for classes in the African American Studies Minor. I cannot stress enough how important this program is to the livelihood of students on this campus AND to the Black community in San Antonio, who continue to support this program. What message does this lack of respect show the Black community? As a student who has re-invested my time and energy into returning to this university to complete my Master's Degree in Political Science, it is important to me (and it should be to you as well) that the student body should be heard. I will notify every student I know about the lack of support displayed by this department. It is a shame that even in these times, a program such as the African American Studies Minor is allowed to wither on the vine. As a student, I am appalled at the obvious disregard for the students who want these classes. I apologize for the tone of my message, but I strongly believe in the value of the African American Studies Program and it should not be ignored by administration. I Implore you to help remedy this situation and see to that these classes are fully utilized. Please assign Professor Williams these classes so that fellow students can enjoy the experience of UTSA's multi-cultural atmosphere. If you have any questions, I will be available for a meeting so that we can further discuss this situation. Thank you. Margaret Richardson Chair, Students Committed to Change Master's Candidate - Political Science - 2008
