THIS Thursday the Karl Marx Theater served as the venue for a political-cultural gala that opened the 8th Congress of the Young Communist League (UJC) and in addition, was a tribute to the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) on its 48th anniversary.
The gala was attended by Ral Castro, minister of the FAR; Ricardo Alarcn, president of the Cuban Parliament; Felipe Prez Roque, foreign minister; and Esteban Lazo, vice president, among others.
1,200 delegates and invited guests are attending the Congress, which runs from today until December 5 at the capitals International Conference Center, with discussions in six work commissions on issues related to the work of the political organization.
The UJC was founded in April 1962 and groups together some 500,000 young people, and is an organization whose working objectives are directed at all Cuban youth.
It has relations with sister organizations in 218 countries and is affiliated to the World Democratic Youth Federation; it is likewise developing links with another 14 international organizations.
An open tribunal has been organized for Sunday and will serve as a preliminary to the plenary session of all the delegates. The congress closes on the same day.
