Philly Kids Create Positive Music on Blip TV

To combat the large amounts of crime caused by poverty and other related variables, youth in various schools across Philadelphia, PA and surrounding counties are producing positive music that can be heard at Listen UP! Radio on blip.tv These songs, cleverly disguised as rap and pop music are being created as a way to strengthen the communities, families, and schools that they attend.

Music is a very powerful tool and in this case is being used to heal the wounds of broken communities. Spearheaded by "Saint" Paul Dunnaville, who is a music producer and teacher, his programs have benefited hundreds of youth by using the power of music to expand their limited perspective.

The music is most effective when dealing with "at risk" youth who feel that they have no options other than rap and sports. As an attractive distraction to hanging out on the street corners, Saint Paul works primarily with non-profits and community based organizations serving these youth through after-school programs, community beacon centers, churches, and art-based organizations.

This information is especially beneficial for educators who are looking for a positive way to use hip hop in the classroom. Hip Hop music is a successful way to stimulate and engage students, and has been used by many educators to achieve success amongst students in the classroom.

Some of the organizations and schools involved include students from Intercultural Family Services, Inc., Young Scholars Charter School, Germantown High School and Youth Services Agency.
